I thought about this because twice in the last few weeks I've heard an analyst on NFL Network say the 4 most important positions are Quarterback, Left Tackle, Defensive End, and Cornerback.  I don't completely agree even though they say it like it's a proven fact.

My opinion of the 4 most important positions on the field:

1.  Quarterback -  This one is obvious
2.  Middle Linebacker - Basically the defenses Quarterback (at least if you've got a good player at this spot)
3.  Left Tackle/Right Tackle - Depending on if your Quarterback is left-handed or right-handed, someone has to protect his blindside
4.  Free Safety - My favorite of all positions, A safety is the last line of defense to stop a Running Back and also has to save the CornerBack if he gets beat by a Wide Receiver,  How they don't consider this one of the most important positions I just don't understand,  LOL

Running Back and Wide Receiver are very important skill positions but they fall just off my top 4 simply because I've seen teams with good quarterbacks be very successful without a whole lot of talent at one or both of these skill positions.  The Kicker probably is somewhere at least in the top 10 as well.

Yep. Overall, I'd say that all positions are important, but I agree with you. Without those 4 listed below, there really wouldn't be much of a chance in an actual game of football.

I sadly disagree I do not think football would really need a safety. But I agree with everything else. I would put instead of a safety maybe Wide Receiver. Then we both would be able to agree on your conclusion.

I would argue that a Free Safety isn't as important as a top of the line Cornerback. Without the cornerback, the free safety is basically the corner back. The free safety is just insurance really.

Yea, when I think about it you guys are probably right about the free safety but I have to stand by my decision since it's my favorite position and where I always line up when I'm playing with a big enough group of people.  However, when I'm playing with a small group of course I have to line up at corner so I see how people could see it as more important.

The 4 most important positions in football to me are quarterback (of course), center, the blindside tackle for the quarterback, and the Mic linebacker. The quarterback/center exchange gets the play started and if it goes wrong that means it's a fumble for the offense, the blindside tackle is important cause he is protecting the blindside of the quarterback (The name says it all) and the Mic linebacker is the quarterback of the defense calling the plays for the defense.

None of them are more important then the other. This is like asking what is more important on a car, tires or gasoline. You need both to get somewhere.

What is important are the sidelines, yard number, where you are on the field and what formation occurs during release of ball.

I think the Quarterback, Runnerback, Wide receiver, and the Linebacker are the most important, but in generally the entire team.

I think that the most important postions are in this order.
number 1.) is quarterback, with out him there will not being in scoring i can pretty much gurantee it.
number 2.) is wide reciever, used to get down the field with a simple catch.
number3.) is the linbackers. good defense lead to victory.
number4.) is the center, they can see whats going on in time to tell there partners.

To me the most improtant positions for the game of football is...

1. Quarterback- He is the face of your franchise and he is the one who I should expect to make acurate throws to the WR when its 3rd n long. He needs to know the plays on offense and behave himself both off and on the field. I imagine someone like Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Tom Brady, or Drew Brees at QB as all these QBs can make the throws when it matters and all can gaurentee at least 10 wins when they are on the field (this is subject to health, defense, and who they are playing).

2. Middle Linebacker- He is the Leader of your Defense who has to stop the Running back if he runs up the middle. He can also play pass coverage and be aware to adjust the Defense when he notices that the offense is running a certain play. Someone like Brain Urlacher would fit this discription as he is both good playing the pass, stopping the run, and good awareness.

3. Wide Receiver- He needs to be the go too guy who can catch the ball when in double coverage or in single coverage. The second face of your franchise also who needs to show disipline and behavior both on and off the field. Someone like Jerry Rice, Megatron, or Victor Cruz as all are unstoppable and can catch the ball when the defense is playing double coverage or one-on-one.

4. Corner Back- He is the guy who you expect to guard the opponites WR and he needs to be the guy who can play in one-on-one coverage and coverage. He should be the shut down corner back to take away the opponite's number 1 WR for the game. I imagine him like Showtime, Derelle Revis, Nnamdi (before he went to the Eagles), or both of Seattle's CBs as all of them are shutdown type of CBs who can take the opponite's WR for the game or at least make it difficult for the WR to catch the ball.

Last 2 that missed out would be Center and Left Tackle.

1. Center because he snaps the ball to the QB as well as blocking.

2. QB because he handles the ball on every play and is the leader of most offenses.

3. Linebacker because the linebackers are the leaders of the defense.

4. Kicker because if you don't have a good kicker you cant make field goals and the other team will start farther up the field if a kicker cant kick far enough on the kick off.

1. The quarterback. That's pretty much easy, as he runs the plays and sets the cadences.

2. Mike linebacker. The anchor of the defense, you call on this guy to read the offenses and make things happen on defense.

3. Running back. Without a good running game, your offense is one-dimensional. A back who can block and catch is even more lethal.

4. Tight end. This is different than most people, but I think a tight end is an underrated asset to a team. If he can block, catch, and even run the ball (Aaron Hernandez), your team can be absolutely lethal.

Don't you kinda need a center??? But excluding the center i say most important 4 would be quarter back, full back, tackle, corner.

Yeah, I guess when I am A Runner Back, I say it is so easy to get touch downs sometimes because there is barely anyone defending me on the field.

You list is pretty accurate. But I would also change the free safety with a corner back. If we are talking pros, I would have said running back a few years ago, but with all these rules that will make the run game practically useless, they don't deserve to be on the list anymore.

Why list them?
Every player is needed and is just as valuable.
To be perfectly honest it all has to do with the strategy the team are intending to use.

And I think JigSaw summed it up pretty well so look at his post.
