In about a week I'm about to buy a brand new machine Got the brand picked out I'm sure you all know what it is lol. But I'm having problems deciding. Should I get a laptop or no? Anyone here got one? What are the advantages/ disadvanteges with laptops comparred to normal computers? Internet is my main concern, so if I can't get a connection on the laptop then the laptop is a waste

It would be nice to have a portable computer though. Wonder what I should go with...

Laptop and PC will connect the same way.. almost all laptops have wireless these days (so being connected and walking around your house is wicked cool) but aside from that most have built in modems... so no probs connecting to net.Only downfall i upgrading, its more expensive and greatly restricted in terms of latter upgrading compared to a standard PC. Thats why i rented, every 12 months i get the latest laptop. No fees or added costs. Easy as pie.

Laptops have batteries, and they die. What do you want it for? Gaming, programing, mixture of both?

I'd say desktop hands down, but before upgrading mine, i'd go by a laptop.

I do like to use it for gaming at times but not all the time. I will be using it for design, programming, and gaming pretty much. I guess desktop is better way to go since it will be my main computer and laptops seem more easily to get damaged. Only bad thing is I hate how it reads cd's vertically Probably will get external hardrive as well.

Well... I have no clue the brand >.<

What are the specs for the computer?

Oh, and I only dislike the mouse and keyboards on laptops.
Everything else is fine.
(And I'm aware of USB keyboards + mouses)

Laptop is less powerful and have lower lifetime, but they are portable as hell and good for on the go.

Desktop is more powerful and longer lifetime, but only at home.

So short question: A little everywhere or a lot at home?

Here's what I'll probably get, very basic but twice as fast as what I got now.

iMac 20-inch: 2.4GHz
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1GB memory
250GB hard drive1
8x double-layer SuperDrive
ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT with 128MB memory

Turns out this is better then the laptop as far as what you get for same price.

Hope you're not paying a lot for that Jigsaw because that's not very good for today's standards

Since you do all your stuff at home and never leave home, you're best off with a Desktop.

Well I'm currently on 1.9ghz and 512mb of memory. I've lasted 3+ years with this one lol. But it is out of date as the software I need requires a more powerful processor. What is good for todays standards?

Well the processor seems really week and the RAM seems awfully low. I bought my laptop 4 years ago and it had a much better processor than that and 3 times more ram.

And since you're going to be doing some serious programming and some gaming, you'll definitely want something better than that.

My Compaq notebook was $399, and it's still doing great after nearly a year. If you're going to get a laptop and you're on a budget, AND looking for awesome performance, Compaq Vista home premium is a great deal

Honestly on a limited budget I'd go with building a computer. To me the best part is I know exactly what I have and I can upgrade much more easily. If you are wanting a jmac though, you have to pay a premium for that, and from what I can tell, there's not too much you can do about upgrading.

Your graphics card sounds a bit week but don't know for sure. I found an 8800GT for $125 on TigerDirect.com But to get the stats you are getting it really depends on what you are paying. If you can say what you are looking to spend we could be a bit more specific.

That's true, it's less pricey to build a computer from the ground up than to get one that's pre-made.

He wants a mac though which changes everything. In order to get a mac, you pretty much have to pay 3 times as much as a PC would with the same exact power

But why a Mac? The only thing I'd give is it's Media capabilities... Anything else, PC hands down.
On a different subject, could you, theoretically, build your own laptop? I think it seems feasible.
And can you give us a small range of your budget? It would make helping you a bit easier.

Once you go Mac you never go back But reason for Mac is durability, which PC doesn't have or at least the 3 I owned previously. One I got is 2004 and it's almost 2009, no problems the whole 5 years so I say that's worth the extra money. I could build my own computer but don't know a whole lot about the internal stuff. I guess I could get a PC laptop for cheap and that way I would have a Mac desktop and PC laptop and save a few bucks. If you know of any good cheap PC laptops let me know
