* If they help you at the time of need.
* They don't "use" you for just money.

I asked myself this question many times when I was a young person.
The Best way to discover a true friend is to go through Hell and Back with them and see if they stick around, or see if they get left behind. Same question can be had with your self. Would you stick around with this person or that, or would you leave them behind.
Hard Choice to make but it makes everything clear when you are in an emergency situation.
A clip from a game Honestly describes the answer I am getting around.
(Just Skip to 16 or 17 minutes in and listen for the word "No man could ask for a better company".)
