In some of the videos they say things like "first we 'charge' the putty by letting it touch the magnet for a few seconds", so I'd assume it has no magnetic propertys to begin with, then it is charge by touching the magnet.
Probably just fine metal fragments in the putty.

I had once seen (on braniacs?) how its possible to magneticly charge a fridge, as with any metal surface. Running a magnet along it (no contact) in one direction can magnetise it.

Wonder if people would be stupid enough to buy "my amazing magnetic paper clips"
Box contains 6 regular paper clips and 1 strong magnet.
