Have you ever noticed that all anime fans have pretty much watched the same shows as non-fans like DBZ and Sailormoon but somewhere around 12 the fans discover the same shows originally on Cartoonnetwork and become fans like YuYu Hakusho and niche shows while non fans drift away. Ask any inner city kid about Sailor moon and strangely they'd know the theme song word from word even a footbal player, but no other anime. Also Pokemon and DBZ . Why do fans become fans?

I think the reason why is because at age 6, people don't know the difference between mainstream anime and American cartoons. Somewhere in the middle, the people that are anime fans today were told that that was anime and they continued to research them. At the same time, people that are not anime fans today, but watched those shows, didn't know that and continued to watch just American cartoons.
