Super Mario Bros. Z (SMBZ) is a Flash-based series made by Mark Haynes, a.k.a. Alvin Earthworm. Sonic the Hedgehog and Shadow the Hedgehog have warped to the Mushroom Kingdom to find the Chaos Emeralds, and only Mario and Luigi can help them. SMBZ features a wide variety of characters you may remember from past games, but I am not going to spoil any surprises! You can find the series on Newgrounds or go to alvinartwork on Youtube. The Youtube channel is not maintained by Alvin Earthworm, but supposedly has his approval.

For the long-time fans: Alvin Earthworm has recently gotten back into making the series! On his deviantart page, he posted a journal entry on November 10th stating that he will finally work on the series after having "goofed-off" for the past 2 years.

Other than that comment, the series is good with all the intense action and small comedic moments, a bit like what many of us knows (hence the name). Recommendations to anyone who's a fan of either Mario, Sonic, or Dragon Ball Z or looking for some good sprite animation entertainment.

I first saw this on NewGrounds, while I don't spend much time on there, this is by far one of my favorite flash series. The crossover between Sonic, MArio, and Dragon Ball Z style fighting / effects makes it really turned out well.
