So I took the Biology Major Fields Test (MFT) on Wednesday. For those who don't know, this is a test every college student who has biology anywhere in their major. This includes biology majors or educators with biology within their teaching field. I am in the latter group. Over 50,000 students took this test this year, and I got my results. Note that I am not given what I got on each section of the test. I am just given how well I did in comparison to every person who took this test. So 50% means I did better than half the people who took the test. Here are my results for each section:

Cell Biology: 58%
Molecular Biology and Genetics: 60%
Organismal Biology: 73%
Population Biology, Evolution, and Ecology: 68%
Overall: 64%

That means that in the section I did the lowest in comparison to everyone, I still did better than 58% of them. In all the others, I was really close to scoring within the top quarter of over 50,000 people. Pretty stoked about it.

When I just read the percents I was like, "Wow you did just awful." Then I realized how they were read felt dumb and realized you did really good. I am pretty proud of you! If only you got the top score!

That's not a bad score. Doing better than over half of the educated people that took the test (and all of them probably took it very seriously) just shows how much talent and work you've put into the subject. You'll make a fine biology teacher someday.

Didowe : Everyone who has biology anywhere in their major took this test in the country. So all biology majors, education majors with biology as a teaching field, etc, took the exam. And the other 58% weren't necessarily failures. We don't know what we scored on the test. For all I know, I could have gotten 90% on the Cell Biology portion, but only did better than 58% who took the exam. The point of the exam isn't to see who passes and fails, but to see how a college/university's biology department is doing compared to other colleges/universities. 

So let me see if I understand this. The test you took was more to see how the individual colleges and universities are doing? Not the students themselves?

AuraBlaze : That is correct. It is something that they just made a requirement very recently. But it is very similar to the licensure test that I will have that I must pass in order to have biology in my teaching field. There is a test like that for all teaching fields, so I will have to take one for my speech and theater fields too.
