I'm not sure where you are in the world but here in New York there's a channel called 90's Nickelodeon, or something similar to that...it basically shows all the good shows from the 90's like the one's you mentioned, All That, Kenan and Kel, Clarissa Explains It All, Are You Afraid Of The Dark, The Amanda Show, all the shows we know, love, and miss!

Actually, I was watching Hey Arnold last night on that channel.

I have fond memories of cartoons from the 80's and 90's, but I don't think I'd want to sit and watch them anymore.  I feel like I've outgrown them.

Have a great day!

I wish the shows like Johnny Bravo, Courage, and Dexter's Lab were still on Cartoon Network. And I miss Rocko's Modern Life, The Wild Thornberry's and Ah real monsters from Nick.

There are good cartoons left like Adventure Time, Regular Show, Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, Chowder, The Amazing World of Gumball and MLP: FiM.... that's about it but the rest of em are so godawful. There were awful cartoon shows back when we were kids we just don't remember them because they were so forgettable, Captain Planet anyone? It's always been the same, a bunch of bad cartoons sprinkled with some good ones, just our perception of what is good and what isn't has changed.

They got replaced with other cartoons, some that might be worse and some that might be just as good or better. Really the ninties or any era was not this perfect time for cartoons where every show was great. No the 90's had it's share of crap. It's just that it's easier to forget the shows you did not like in the past because well people tend to rember the good parts more fondly then the bad parts and even tend to forget the bad. With today's bad cartoons they are harder to forget because they are constantly shoved in our faces.

Yet there are still plenty of good cartoons on TV today. And the good cartoons of today are the classics of fifteen years from now that the next generation will be asking "Where did they go and why do new shows suck compared to them" it is a cycle that should be stopped but never will.

They are there but you just have to find them and they are harder to find. Not just that but people over all have a different taste and they do not want what they wanted back then.

I have switched over to Anime to find some of the old joys as well as watch old re runs of the show.

Nothing... The today's cartoons are good... But for the today's kids.

Just think, adult people of 90's used to think the same thing that we think today about the New cartoons... So, In some years, our kids will hate the cartoons of the future era... That's all.

I think all the cartoons manifested themselves into one magnificent blob called "Friendship is Magic."

But seriously, though. Part of the reason cartoons seem bad is that we've grown up. We didn't notice some of the junk on TV as kids because we were kids. Also, we have a more grown-up sense of humor. Sometimes the reason we like the old shows is purely nostalgia; if we watched some of them for the first time today, they likely wouldn't be as great.

Although there were some great shows way back when. Dexter's Lab, Ed, Edd & Eddy, Rugrats, older episodes of Spongebob...

I've seen some other newer cartoons, though. The Looney Tunes Show is pretty good most of the time, and I enjoyed Adventures of Gumball. I find Adventure Time to be... strange. I guess it's just not my cup of tea. Fortunately, My Little Pony satisfies all my cartoon needs.

Nothing happened to them. That generation of kids grew up, and a new generation of children has come along with new experiences and they need new cartoons to relate to. A kid watching Rugrats today wouldn't understand most of the problems the parent's face in a pre-cell phone world, and they'd wonder why Angelica was so ignorant of the world around her. Why isn't she on her mom's iPad reading Wikipedia whenever one of the babies asks a question? Add to that, kids today are being supervised by adults that were the very children watching these cartoons in the 90s, and they've already seen all of that. Even if they aren't very interested in watching cartoons, who wants to watch the same set of shows over and over again.

So they make new cartoons. And they're not necessarily worse or better, but they aren't relevant to you. So you aren't interested in watching them, and even if you catch an episode here or there, you never give them the opportunity to really grow on you.

Dude, Lazlo pretty much summed up my opinion of what happened to the good cartoons. We watched these cartoons, and we grew up now. I think that as an adult, you can only relate to those cartoons you grew up with and not the newer ones. WE might say these older cartoons were the best cartoons ever created, while kids today will probably grow up and say that this generations cartoons were the best thing ever. We may not agree with that, but it happens. It's all just opinions after all.

creativerealms : YAY, someone who gets it! There was never truly any golden age for cartoons. I also believe that you are more fond of what you grew up with, I.E, for many of you who hated shows like chowder and consider them to be a part of the major descent of CN (I do dislike the show quite a bit), ask yourself this. When you just started watching cartoons, were you anywhere near as critical of them as you are now? If Chowder were to have aired during your personal "Golden Age of Cartoons when you were of the target audience for the show" would you have thought when you saw Chowder, "What the heck is that thing? Why are they all named after food? I find these characters to be incredibly stupid and un entertaining with their trivial exploits and cliché endeavors!"? I highly doubt it. What you were more likely thinking at such an early age was, "Ooh, pretty picture box, funny raccoon bear cat demon thing...". As you mature, these same cartoons still hold a place in your heart, which allows you to accept them for their flaws, even as you become older, and less accepting of cartoons in general, as well as becoming more aware of the tricks in animation, the overall generic-ness of both characters and stories, and a much more critical person in general causing you to pick up immediately on the same old flaws, in new cartoons that you did not grow up with, and therefore, do not accept. Shows that people miss like Cow and Chicken, Johnny Bravo, Billy and Mandy, and Foster's home all had their share of generic stupidity that went unnoticed because you were to attached to them growing up to notice such problems. If you look back on the cartoons that you watched as a 40 year old man, I'll bet that you would look at them and say "Wow, did I really used to like that?"
Main point of story, you like it when you grow up with it unaware of the flaws and accept it, when you get older you become more critical of new things and take note of all of their flaws instantly, rejecting them and tend to wonder what happened to old cartoons when the fact is, not much really happened, just slight changes in the average tastes of modern children and maturity taking it's effect on your nostalgia-bound mind.

I really want to know what happened to the old cartoons because to me they were better than some of the cartoons that's airing now. I recently heard that you can watch some of them online on youtube and or hulu but I never took the time to do it.

"Good" is relative. No two people like everything the same, and no one thing is liked by everyone.

I grew up watching the typical Saturday morning cartoons of the 80s while seeing older cartoons later in the evening. While I enjoy a nice ongoing storyline (which you rarely saw in 80s cartoons: you could watch any episode at any time and not get confused about events that they mention.)

What I don't enjoy are shows that are all about fighting, constantly hating each other, and taking 5 episodes to complete a single battle. Of course, having magical superpowers and the ability to bring up reserve energy 100 different times makes long battles more plausible, I don't want my cartoon to act like a soap opera. Fight, get it over with in 2 episodes at most, and move on. If not for those battles, though (this being almost exclusively Anime,) they wouldn't know what to write about and instead of 400 episodes, you would have only 50.

I don't care for many of the American cartoons today either, but that's a trade off from many shows that I didn't like from the previous decades either. Again, it's all relative to the generation and from one person to the next.
