Maple Story------------------------------------------
No, it's not a novel about syrup. This Korean MMORPG has grown quickly in numbers from users to dollars earned since its 2003 Debut. It's got fresh graphics, good gameplay, and some serious level gaining to do. However, will it be able to survive the gauntlet that is this review? Read to find out!
Graphics:
This part of the game is so unexpected. You'd think the leading competitor against World of Warcraft would be a medieval MMORPG with gryphons and "Gold Pieces" that go for 70 bucks a bundle on Ebay, but it's this Anime-Style game with weird graphics and squishy cute monsters that breathes new life into the term MMORPG.
However, the overly-colorful environments, like Ludibrium (A rip-off of Lego Land), has enough colors in it to give you a seizure if you're in a dark room.
Music:
There is usually NO music whatsoever in an MMORPG, in order to let the player listen to their own tunes in the background. However, Maple Story isn't the case here. There are tunes for every map and every quest area, but that's not necessarily a good thing. The kiddie music gets old fast, and can give even the most tolerant of players headaches after a while.
Game Play:
This has the typical MMORPG game play, kill tons of monsters, do a quest, and level up to be able to kill tons of STRONGER monsters. Rinse, repeat. Even though it seems extremely repetitive, it's actually a fun and engaging experience because Nexon has added NX CASH, or gift cards that add in-game points for costumes, premium weapon designs like light sabers, pillows, and even guitars. It's a fun way to kill monsters without getting really bored.
Replay Value:
Obviously you might like to play an MMORPG for long periods of time, which will give it great replay value, but that's not the case here. The Experience Point curve gets too steep too fast, which makes new players lose their patience rather quickly. I mean seriously, to get from level 199 to 200, it takes over 1,000,000,000 experience points, which is well over 50 hours if you were to just hunt monsters, and not bosses.
Plus, the experience points are high at the beginning. Monsters on average provide 42 EXP for levels 20 to 30, and at level 30 the required EXP is 90,000+. Takes too long to level at times.
