First of all, my house is going through major construction, so stories about things happening are not exactly an oddity.  My story is no different, but I can't help but share it.  I've even told complete strangers about it because it amuses me so much.

Here is the story:

The power was turned off while my Mom and I were away.  We didn't think much of it.  We just turned off the upstairs power strips and went about our business.  The previous time they turned the power off, a couple of the strips blew.  Something to note is that they were working on the stairs to the basement on this particular day, so we could not get to the stuff in the basement.
Sometime later... The electrician had left after giving us power again.  Dad and I were preparing to leave for our softball games and we found that the garage door wasn't going down.  This prompted further investigating.  I went downstairs.  I didn't smell anything burning.  What cued me in that something wasn't right was the Wii.  The light was not on.  This led to a through check of all the electronics in the basement.  In addition to what was found blown downstairs, I will also add what went out upstairs.

What was blown:
Wii, Xbox 360, Nintendo 64, Xbox (x2), SNES, Sega Genesis, a Direct TV box, 2 VCR/DVD players, the phone with answering machine, the garage door, the sprinkler system and the internet router (which did not go right away, but we are sure that had something to do with the surge).

What survived:

The TVs, a old stereo system, 5 disk CD changer, Recorder player, the PS2 and the NES.

The Gamecube, PS1, the newer 360 and the PS3 were fortunately not in the house (or in the Gamecube and PS1 case not plugged in) at the time.

The contractor for the remodel is paying for the replacement costs.  His insurance covers it.  Of course, he's been very slow about looking into how much he needs to give us.

This is not really the point of your story, of course, but I have to say it. Wow, you have a lot of consoles in your house. A bit of jealousy emanating from this direction over here. Is there a lot of gaming going on there?

There's a fair amount of gaming.  Most of the consoles belong to my brother, so when he started playing WoW, the usage dropped quite a bit, but they all still get used from time to time.

Aw that's terrible. I hate having people work at my house because I'm afraid they'll break something too.

It's a good thing to know that it'll be replaced. At least the guy didn't leave you empty-handed.
