I have been wondering about this for a while.  I see movie commercials about movies in 3D.  To all the people that have movie theatres, do they still use the 3D glasses in the theatres or did they make the screens in 3D like the 3DS?

My local movie theater has the 'real' 3D glasses. I don't like them, to be honest. They hurt my eyes after awhile. =| But yeah, it's the glasses - not the screen itself.

No, on a screen that big, and with that many people watching, having 3D in the theater without glasses is impossible.

The reason that the 3DS works is because the screen reflects the images just right so one goes into each eye, and you get that 3D effect. This only works with one person at a close proximity. If you've ever tried to watch someone play the 3DS from the side, and the image is all blurry, you'll know what I mean.

In a theater, they'd have to somehow make it so that each of those images is going into each eye of the 100 or so people in each seat. That would take a massive amount of mirrors and isn't very practical. So 3D glasses are still the way to go there.

Although a movie without 3D glasses would be very interesting. Who knows? In 5-10 years, we could have technology that does that too.

EDIT- By the way, the 3D glasses in the theaters are not the red and blue one that you grew up with. They're specially made- don't ask me how- so that you can watch the movie with clear glasses, so it doesn't look like you have glasses at all.

We still use the 3D glasses here in Florida theaters.  And I'm kinda over the 3D thing if you wanna know the truth.  That's just the theaters way of making more money off of me.  Charge me $3 for glasses that cost them pennies to make.

The last movie I saw in theaters in 3D was maybe a month ago. I saw Final Destination 5 in 3D, and yes theaters still provide 3D glasses. It's always needed to get the 3D effect.
