I believe the US is just being ignorant by not adding a tariff for importing goods. I don't believe we are approaching this matter in a smart way. It just doesn't make sense. Why should we give in to buying stuff from mostly China? DC keeps fighting over what to do about debts. Here's a start.. MAKE A TARRIFF!!

It is ignorant to not support making markets smaller, to not support making the cost of living even higher, to not support interfering even more with and against the peaceful actions of individuals, to not support reducing via aggression the opportunities of those far poorer?

If you don't want to trade with people in China, then don't. That others want to do so is only their business.

We should not worry about our debt, we are trillions in debt and we have been in debt since the 70's and probably even earlier. There is absolutely no way out and there is no way we can pay off 40+ years of debt in anytime soon. If the government can still operate on trillions of dollars in debt that makes you realize that anyone in America has the right to do the same and not have to pay for it and not go to jail for it either.

More taxes won't fix anything, less imports wont fix anything, cutting the budget wont fix anything, new presidents wont fix anything, the only way to fix our current debt is to forget it even exists or kill whoever we owe the debt to. But the solution they are going to use is force an economic collapse to establish a new system. They teased it several times before and they will eventually pull the trigger.

We should not even be in other countries let alone giving countries like pakistan millions or maybe even billions of dollars in funding their little terrorism games. CIA and military are just useless agencies that promote terrorism in order to get money. They are a business so terrorists in their eyes are a good thing not a bad thing. If world peace existed those agencies would never exist, so the more terrorist and the more corruption going on the better it is for government, they just like to make you worry is all and they want you to feel like you need them. I honestly don't care either way, no one man can change the corruption within for the better. China should nuke DC it would be cheaper then us having to do it ourselves

Well, obviously it's not going to be paid anytime soon. I'm just saying that a tariff on imported goods will help.

Tariffs may violate existing trade treaties (depending on the country in question), and are guaranteed to hurt the economy further. They don't really generate money.

I think that it is an ok idea but it could make people really mad. The last thing we need is a whole bunch of mad people that we owe money. A war could break out easily.

j4m3zizk0olo07 : tarifs arent necessarily a good thing.before ww1 america was in recesion and turnem to tarifs on foreign goods.europe responded by placing tarifs on american goods and almost halting purchase of american goods, further damaging americas economy.when the european union was created and tarifs on member states standardised to a very low level the economy became a lot better.tarifs wont help,it will damage your economy.
Think about this.europe compensates by taxing american exports.it now becomes more expensive for europeans to buy a microsoft pc than a european linux pc.
Microsofts shares plunge, linux's rises, and now america is not making a fortune as the centre of pc operating systems.maybe production of most computers shifts to europe, usa's economy gets worse.
Bad effects can occur.

First, the United States exercises tremendous tariff control on inported goods.  I'll show you hundreds of current tariffs enacted by the U.S. government to charge other countries to bring their stuff here.

We also buy stuff from China because it is much less expensive for the Chinese to make certain goods than it is for us to make goods.  If the U.S. manufactures a Nike Air Jordan, it will cost perhaps $10.00 to make it due to labor, resources, etc.  China can make it for $1.00.  There is no sense in making it here.  The U.S. should focus on what we're good at, like writing software for Microsoft and building Boeing jets.

We use tariffs.  Tariff law is rampant in the U.S. to protect our own goods, especially cars, from foreign manufacturers.

JigSaw : More taxes won't fix anything, less imports wont fix anything, cutting the budget wont fix anything, new presidents wont fix anything, the only way to fix our current debt is to forget it even exists or kill whoever we owe the debt to.

Quick some one tell Greece, they just need to forget their debt exists and everything will be fine!

I am not to sure where to start, there is so much wrong in your sentence. First of all you can't just forget about debt. If a person or a business takes a loan or borrows money, you can't just not pay it back.  I hope you weren't being serious when you suggested that America kills off the people it owes money too, that is just wrong on so many levels... this isn't gangwar loan sharks we are talking about here. More taxes, cutting the budget, and more exports ( changed that from less imports) will fix things. Basically America is spending way to much money and any way to get the government more money will help to pay off debt.

No anyone is suggesting that America will get rid of their debt over night,  but they also arn't suggesting that you can just forget about the problem and act like it never happened. If it were this easy there wouldn't even be a debate about how to handle it currently going on.

You say that America shouldn't be worried about debt, but that is what got them into the situation they are in now. Years of butting debt on the back burner has lead to this situation where there is way too much debt that the "U.S. Government can't pay its own bills" --Barack Obama
Since 2005 the national debt has doubled  when it was around 7 trillion and it is now over 14 trillion. If you ask me American Governments should have been maintaining, at the very least , a balanced budget, especially during the recent recession. If all the government decides to do is increase the "debt cealing" than all they are doing is once again putting the issue on the back burner for it to be sorted out at a later date.

I agree with you when you said "We should not even be in other countries let alone giving countries like pakistan millions or maybe even billions of dollars in funding their little terrorism games" although I am not sure what you mean by funding their terrorism games. Stopping wars and foreign aid is in a way cutting the budget , which as I said will help pay off debt.

The biggest problem I see is that it took your government way too long to try and fix its debt. You shouldn't wait until you are bankrupt until you realize that you need to change your budget. It's times like these when I am glad I am not American. I hope no one takes personal offence to this, and I should point out that I do enjoy and love many things that are American.

"what history really shows is that today's empire is tomorrow's ashes" -- Mumia Abu Jamal (African American activist on death row)

To address the original posters topic about tariffs. I think tariffs are a short term solution to help generate more income, but in the end can hurt the economy. As others have pointed out , tariffs are a two way street...if you increase tariffs on a countrys exports they will likely do the same thing to your exports, or worse stop trading with you.

warmaker : It really is nice to know I'm not the only one that does the research.

But yes, we totally have tariffs. They don't account for a huge part of the budget like they did before the Great Depression, but we do have tariffs on about 30% of all imported goods. It's been found the economy does better with lower tariffs because of the way the world economy works, and also it has been conclusively shown that higher tariffs increase occurrences of smuggling.
