Today I bought some nicotine patches to try and help me quit smoking. I have tried to quit in the past by going cold turkey but could never last more than a day or two. Since I was 16 I have been smoking and I am now 25 so it is 9 years of habit, and to be honest it wont be easy to quit. Wish me luck every one, I will need it!

If anyone has any tips or stories of how they succesfully quit please share them.

Also, if you have never smoked, never start. It is just a waste of time and money, not to mention that whole thing about killing you sooner.

Awesome! It's great that you're taking steps to breaking that habit. I have never smoked, and never will, but I know that it is extremely difficult for people to quit the habit, no matter how much they want to. My only advice would be to keep doing what you're doing, maybe get some friends to help keep you accountable, and before long, you'll be saying goodbye to the cigarette!

I recently bought an Electronic Cigarette. It's kinda neat but tastes absolutely disgusting. Try smoking that for a week and you'll be disgusted of the taste of cigarettes...well for me at least. Seems like every time I put a cigarette in my mouth I'm reminded of the horrible taste of the E. Cigarette. It's lessened the amount I smoke, so that's a good thing.

Well I smoked about five times just to know the taste, but I was engrossed in other things so did not continue it.  Well I really think you should join a good club with prior in your mind reducing it at first, afterward the small stages and finally quit, it is stage by stage. I hope that you can do it because all smoking really does is get you addicted and more or less ruin your life it is not a good idea to start smoking. Many people I know died because of it. I wish you the best of luck.

My mom's been smoking since she was 12, and that was around 28 years ago. Many times I've tried to make her quit because she will literally buy around 600 cigarettes at a time which OBVIOUSLY hurts the money of a family that is in welfare, and of course, kills her own health as well. Its nice that you are trying to defeat that ugly habit, my dad has been smoking for about 5 years now, he did defeat the habit before, but after my mom died he started again. I would find something else that can fill the erge that gets you smoking. Like use gum or something.

Get lots of sleep it helps cure and fix a lot of things including cravings for cigarettes. I would not rely on patches you don't want to get addicted to those too. Plus second hand smoke smells great when you don't smoke for a while so that is something to look forward too

my friends are trying to quit too and so far they're doing good going cold turkey, have you tried getting a group together and quitting? that always helps and then get a non smoker friend to keep you all under check. my mate said the most important thing when going cold turkey is to keep busy, devil makes work of idle hands and all that.

I smoked for 6 years before quitting and I found it really difficult but after three attempts I finally beat it.
So I understand how you must be feeling inside right now. You mentioned you've had a few slips well don't be hard on yourself your doing so well to even have begun to quit and your succeeding.
Your body can be free of the chemical addiction in as little as two weeks yet it's the mental addiction that's hard to beat, know your enemy, your battling with your own mind if your stubborn (Like me) you may have quite a fight ahead of you.
Advice: It's purely habit and routine that you have to change in order to succeed I found this useful.
* Get up a bit later, go to bed earlier, no cravings while your asleep.
* Make fists with your hands and squeeze and release them (Discreetly though, it scares people who are observing Lol) helps to reduce tension and that irritable feeling in your fingers that comes from not having a cigarette between them.
* Breath deeply and slowly through your nose and release through your mouth, helps to calm you.
*Chewing gum never be without it, may not free you from cravings but it gives you something to concentrate on other than " I need a cigarette" also helps with release of tension and removal of  the need to hold something with your lips.
*Snacking (DANGER FOR EXTREME CASES OF I NEED A CIGGARETTE ONLY) in times of trouble sometimes nothing helps fight of the temptation better than a big bag of chips, 5 cherry cokes, 2 packs of Twinkies, etc. Pros takes away cravings, Cons adds weight to you like crazy,  I put on a stone and a half of weight when I was quitting which brings me to my last point.
*Exercise. Jogging is great if your quitting smoking because it's cardio vascular, it gets your heart pumping clean air your now breathing around your body, helps your lungs expand and start cleaning themselves of phlegm and tar, The brain releases endorphins which make you feel positive and if your snacking, burns off excess calories.

I could come up with lots of ways to stop smoking, but each would be stupider and more time consuming than the last, and something that deserves in the Crazy House.....wait a minute *light bulb flashes above head, but then dims* oh wait, that wouldn't work. Well, maybe this will help. I'm supporting you and hope it all ends well. Remember that.
Also, I've been experimenting on myself about how we feel if we tell our self that we are ok. And the results seem to be something like "think positive, feel positive". So maybe (and this sounds like something from a children cartoon, I know), if you tell yourself you don't need a cigarette, you won't need one. All in all, believe in yourself, and good luck.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.
