Well I really think It's the first one because the two colors mix up with the white background and gives the impression of a 'flowing idea/picture'.  I think a border would be great on it(a blue one,with some design).  Using space in Art is a +point........

On a glance I would say the second one is nicer because the design looks more compact; however, I would say that the first one is better for the same reason Someone70 gave. It does look a little awkward having the lions' heads "floating" in the middle.
