thenumberone : That is not how science works. I don't have to prove "them", whoever they are, wrong (that is a logical fallacy anyway). Simply stating your opinion is not enough because opinions are not important; what matters is the empirical data. There are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of studies showing medical benefits to marijuana.
Does THC have any negative effects? It is possible, but they do not seem to be severe, given the number of people who use it without problems. You say there are too many cases of bronchitis and psychosis? Prove it. Show me the statistics and the analysis. More research needs to be done. Meanwhile, there is no disputing that marijuana has a great number of medical benefits, and probably even more that we have yet to discover. Does THC have any negative effects? There are negative side effects to marijuana, that is undeniable. Look at any drug commercial or study of a particular drug, there is always negative side affects. Many that are legal drugs, such as nicotine or tobacco have far worse side effects than weed, and they don't need prescr The Netherlands have one of the worlds most lenient drug laws, but a smaller percentage of their population use drugs than in America. The drug war makes weed (and other drugs) look like a forbidden fruit of sorts, which can lead to more people using it. The war also puts money into criminal hands instead of the government profiting, while at the same time costs hundreds of millions of dollars to tax payers. There isn't really any benefits to having it illegal. It just makes people who would use the drug regardless of its legality support criminals and often deal with shady individuals. http://worldstarhiphop.com/videos/video800.php?v=wshhyd4rmVn6OoG0E6fW&set_size=1 Here is a nice video I hope you enjoy. I don't condone giving a child marijuana, but in this case it saved his life and should have been administered by the child's doctors and not his father. tRIUNE : but it dosent? i thought we established that weed has no narmful effects just contributes small amounts to those already likley to catch it, inm not laying into anyone but if you read alot of the other posts you'll see that weed is no more harmful for you then alchol or other legal drugs and fyi theres legal drugs including pure caffiene where 2 teaspoons kill you so why keep caffiene legal while weed that has never been proved to hurt anyone be banned?
but yeah to a degree this probably will go in circles some will say its harmful then others will disagree but i gotta say the people who put up the best arguments seem to be for the legalisiation of weed. if youve been told somethings wrong all your life then you come to this thread and see that in actual fact its pretty harmless i guess you and anyone else in the same boat will put up a fight but yeah to a degree this probably will go in circles some will say its harmful then others will disagree but i gotta say the people who put up the best arguments seem to be for the legalisiation of weed. if youve been told somethings wrong all your life then you come to this thread and see that in actual fact its pretty harmless i guess you and anyone else in the same boat will put up a fight |

I'm kind of iffy on this subject. While it could help people who have illnesses like cancer, some people could use it as just a way to be buzzed or high. So in some ways I think it would help, in others I think it would be a bad idea. |

Ok here's the deal. Weed is illegal for good reason. In fact we had a project in my civics class where we had to make our own political party. Almost all of the groups were for the legalization of weed and other drugs. My group and one other were against the legalization of drugs. The other group didn't give a reason why, but my reason was that a lot of weed dealers obtain it directly/indirectly from illegal drug cartels. Much of the money those drug cartels make directly funds terrorist organizations. So the fact that weed is illegal has a lot to do with national security. People use weed to get high yes but that is no different then people using liquor to escape reality. So why is liquor legal and weed not? It should be the other way around. |

2112tomsawyer : Kind of like how prohibition gave the rise and power to today's mafias. When they re-legalized alcohol all the rum-runners and bootleggers had to find another way to make money. If it were legalized, the demand would grow but so would the domestic production. And illegal drug cartels cant exactly make a easy profit off of something that is legal. Of course Marijuana has negative medical effects, so do thousands of over the counter drugs and other items that are available for consumers. So why should weed be singled out? tonetone714 : I can see where your coming from, I honestly hadn't thought about it in that way. However that would only make it legal for those drug cartels to do business. Plus, it doesn't change the fact that there are countless medical dangers associated with weed. I realize the same thing could be said about alcohol, but, please correct me if I'm wrong (in a civil and polite manner), at least it's good for you if you drink every once in a while. |

2112tomsawyer : Let me get this straight. You think weed should be illegal because it provides money for drug cartels?? I personally am against drug cartels which is why I think weed should be legal, so the average person can grow it or buy it from a store. This would give money to the government rather than drug cartels. There are other reasons why weed should be legalized but this is one of the major ones. This is also the main reason why LEAP, Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, are gaining members every day and making a push for legalization. When alcohol was prohibited guess what it did? You get a cookie if you know that it allowed criminals to bootleg alcohol and make absurd amounts of money. That is ultimately the reason why it was legalized again. EDIT - Sorry should have read your second post too. Legalizing weed won't make it easier for cartels/criminals to operate their business! It would still be illegal to sell weed, you would most likely need to get a license ( like tabacoo or alcohol) and you would need to operate from a store that pays taxes to the government. If a dealer did this after legalization, they would not be committing a criminal act and would be no different than the average person opening up a weed shop. If weed was legalized who would still buy it from a shady dealer on the street rather than a store? Currently weed is the most expensive crop on earth when measured by weight. If there are no regulations on it then it allows these "criminals" to set their own price. The value of the plant is basically why cartels exist. If they could make insanely high profits from selling illegal cheeseburgers I am sure they would do that too. The reason why it is so expensive is because people will continue to consume the plant regardless of its price and legality, just like they have done for thousands of years ... and because they can set their own prices. Those two factors mean that they get richer than you can believe by growing a plant that is very easy to grow. How many illegal alcohol cartels do you see operating today? NONE! Because there is no money to be gained from selling something a store will sell you for cheaper. When alcohol was prohibited guess what it did? 2112tomsawyer : "However that would only make it legal for those drug cartels to do business.", kinda but not really. Because it would make it legal for everyone to do business. Eliminating the stranglehold the drug cartels have on the market. Overall I think it would benefit society if weed were decriminalized at least. If you want to take a look at this video about that talks about Portugal, which decriminalized all drugs back in 2001, drug use has dropped across all age groups. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=-rr8r1UX0lI#! statistics are @ 1:10. Weed should be legal. The reason being is weed is a drug that we understand the effects that is has are not harmful, or harmful enough to worry about. Weed being illegalized makes people try and develop drugs or other ways of getting high that are legal, or more easily accessible. The problem with that is the results of those are either extremely deadly or haven't been thoroughly tested like weed has. Besides, weed being illegal would make it where these is quality control, well hopefully. Meaning that, you have less of a worry about harmful chemicals being put into it, or quality issues. Well, hopefully there would be. Also, it would take potential revenue away from criminals. A lot of criminals use weed to help fuel other crime rings. Legalizing weed would make it harder to get finances in other criminal activities. Well, the last point is a big maybe... Realistically, I guess if a drug dealer was selling weed before it was legalized, he doesn't exactly have to stop when it is legalized, He might have to go a different route than he was though. But anyway, end result is that it should be legal. Besides, weed being illegal would make it where these is quality control, well hopefully. Meaning that, you have less of a worry about harmful chemicals being put into it, or quality issues. Well, hopefully there would be. Also, it would take potential revenue away from criminals.
