I just visited several U.S. National Parks and I learned a tremendous amount about the mainland.  It's tough to imagine millions of years of rock in motion.

I then wondered what the religious and non-religious groups think about dating the earth.  Is it only a few thousand years old?  Is it millions?

What do you think and why?

I tend to go with the theory that it's billions of years old.

Time has been measured as we know it for only the last 5-10 thousand years (as long as humans have been around following that sort of thing) and what happened before that could have been an extremely long period of time.

I also find when you try and come up with evidence for a young earth you tend to just disregard many years of developed scientific theory. While I'm not suggesting science is always right (since it's job is to continually improve and thus prove itself wrong over and over) I do think that this form of continuous improvement is going to result in more and more accuracy as more time goes by.

Billions of years old... I don't know just how old, I think the current estimate is 4.54 BYO. I trust scientific theory and research such as the radioactive carbon dating that they are using to determine the earth's age. It is a well-proven process, and to disregard it is rather foolish.

Elara : I don't think it's carbon dating they are using.... I'm pretty sure carbon's half life is too short for something like that. I thought they used bigger elements like uranium or something like that because the half-life of those elements is hundreds of millions of years long.... just to clarify

geeogree : Yeah, your are right... it is radiometric age dating of meteorite materials... the wiki page gives quite a bit of nifty info on it.

The Earth is about 4.6 billion years old, but the universe is about 13.9 billion years old. You can tell the the universe is older than the Earth.

Firstly its impossible to pin point the exact age of the Earth. The big bang was estimated at 13.3-13.9 billion years ago and only made an explosion causing matter to be formed it was another few million years before the matter that was created like gases and molecules formed stars and planets the Earth as we know can only be measured by the oldest rocks we can find that arn't asteroids, but were home grown on earth the oldest they've found indicates the earth is around 4.5 to 4.6 billion years old ofc this is all scientific, if you think the Earth is only a few thousand years old i wont say your wrong but really if you get down to it the age of the earth is a fact not an opinion it cant be both a few thousand years old AND a few billion, the fact we found rocks that prove science. Answering the question directly the Earth IS at least 4.5 billion years old

Well I would say Over 1 billion years old because life had evolve. I think I heard somewhere that we all originated from a living cell organism. But then again there's the theory of which came first the Chicken or The Egg? In this case life or the planets or The Sun and The Planets

I believe that the Earth is billions of years old, because all the evidence suggests that it is. I have personally seen some of this evidence first hand.  My occupation used to be a geo-technical driller, which meant in a simple term  , that I drilled holes into the earth.  Every day I would see multiple layers of different geological formations, and over time I would see the geological patterns of a huge area. Other than just seeing different layers, I would also see sedimentary rock left from ancient glaciers and high saline water deposits that are the remnants of ancient oceans or seas.

There is no doubt in my mind that the Earth is much older than the bible portrays it.

The last number of years I heard was that the earth was 2.6 billions of years old, but I'm not sure if this is correct.

I'm all for the scientific estimate of 4.6 billion years.
Personally I just have a strong belief in science, seeing as I was never brought up religious.
I also believe that scientists could put out any false information to the world and half the world would believe it.

It's not difficult to do the research and determine the estimated age of the planet. Another very loose method one could use is the age of the sun. Assuming there is a set amount of time it takes for planets to form around a star like the sun and you are able to determine the age of the sun you might be able have a very guess at the age of Earth. Or, you may also be able to use that method in conjunction with another such as radioactive dating.

Its older than we can record so there is not a true number to how old the earth is. I think the world is 671991 years old

Nobody can really know how old the earth is
It could be thousands of years old theres no way
to determine how old it really is tho.
And no matter what sienctist do there will never be a way.

So far, scientific evidence points to the fact that Earth is about 4 billion years old, and I accept that. Now, I am a Christian myself, but I think there will be a way for science and religion to come together in the future through some sort of discovery and breakthrough.
