If you're sick and you have a cold or flu, I would suggest resting, drinking water, and letting your body fight the illness.

If you're sore from exercise or from working hard, drink some water, gobble some Motrin or Tylenol, and get back out there and exercise more!

I wouldn't recommend it...if you're sick, in pain and/or both. But some people are stubborn and will do it anyway.....

Unless you're a body builder, I don't see the necessity to work out while you're sick. You should be resting trying to get better.

Light stretching or so can help reduce the time needed to recover, but only do that if you can handle it.

I find that physical activity helps me get over a cold faster. It increases your body temperature, metabolism and heart rate which helps to fend off disease (the reason you get a fever while sick, your body is trying to repair itself faster). It also moves around fluid in your lymphatic system, which releases more white blood cells (that destroy disease), antibodies and helps flush pathogens from your body. It also causes you to sweat which can release toxins from the body.

As long as you do it moderately and do not exhaust your body while it is already sick, you should be fine.
I find it very beneficial, even just going for a walk really helps me. Drinking lots of water before working out or running is also a must.

Depends what you mean by aches and pain. Is it muscular or joint-related? If it's the former then a bit of exercise will sort you right out. One of the worst things you can do in that situation is to do nothing. However if you think it's joint related pain go see a doctor immediately; you can permanently injure yourself if you exercise in that condition.

The human anatomy and health is one of my 4 teaching fields for secondary education. I am not a doctor or a medical professional, but this is one or my areas of study.

As far as the pain goes, it really depends on what kind of pain you are talking about. If you are talking about pain in your muscles after you did an exercise you have not done before or in a while, that just means you tore muscle fibers (which is the purpose of the exercise), so excess calcium is leaked from the fibers, which causes the stiffness and cramps. Best to stretch it regularly and keep exercising, but take it easy when it comes to working the area in pain. If it is a pain in the joint, it is not good to put further strain on that area. Joint pain is never a sign that your exercise is working, so it is not a case of 'no pain, no gain'.

When you are sick, rest is the best thing. I saw in a previous post that physical activity helps recover faster, but given my area of study for the last 5 years in college, I respectfully disagree with a few points that post said. Though when you have a fever, it does cause the blood to become more viscous, increasing the blood flow to help move antibodies to affected areas, that is when the body is able to identify the problem as being one that can be fixed in that way, which is a mild fever. In this case, VERY EASY exercise can be beneficial. When your body begins to increase to 100 degrees or over, that is one of your body's last resort methods. When it gets that high, it means that simply increasing flow of antibodies throughout the body did not work. So your body is literally trying to kill whatever is harming your body by cooking it. The problem with this method is that your body's normal temperature is actually extremely close to it's threshold tolerance. Getting over 100 degrees for a prolonged period of time will also cook most of the cells in your body. So doing any exercise that increases blood temperature when you already have a fever like this is asking for trouble. But again, Annette is correct if it is MILD. Also, if you are vomiting, that means that your body knows it is something in your stomach, or it does not know and is just trying it as an option. If you are vomiting, don't exercise in case it is because your body is simply resorting to it.

One final note on exercising while sick. It is important that your exercise is mild like walking. If you go weight lifting, your body will likely divert less energy to getting whatever is making you ill under control to compensate for the energy it takes to do the weight lifting, and your body will not use excess energy to do more than repair your muscle fibers. Your body will not use the energy needed to fix your problem to increase muscle fibers. So doing any workout is not going to result in improved fitness. So stick to walking for the reason Annette stated.

If you are sick you should rest. This is controversial but I have been a bodybuilder for years. NEVER NEVER exercise when you are still feeling sore from your last workout. I have contracted a disorder known as "Over-training syndrome" from doing this myself and it is a miserably disorder to have. I had it very mildly so I got over it in like 1 month but I couldnt train for that month and lost more training time then I gained from overworking my body in the first place.

Well, depending. If it's a cramp, you have to stretch it out and exercise on it.

But if you have sores, don't exercise. At all!

Well, if it's just a little dab o pain, then no, because that's probably from working out. But if you're sick with a fever or something or if you feel way too much pain, you should be resting.

Stretching of the muscles, and tendons helps with some aches in the body, but like others have said:
"it increases your body temperature, metabolism and heart rate which helps to fend off disease (the reason you get a fever while sick, your body is trying to repair itself faster" - I find that some cardio really helps me breathe better sometimes after a deep cough.

if you have a cold or a cough then go for it but if youve jarred your knees or hurt you body somehow its easy for your body to fix little niggles as long as you rest your body if you keep exercising on bad joints or anythign like that your simply making it worse and the same goes for over-execising in general.

Bintsy : Don't exercise while sick, that's counter productive, your body needs the rest. However if you mean like mild aches from workouts then that's allright. If the aches last longer than 3 days you worked too hard.
