I thought I'd be helpful to say how you unlock Jiggly Puff, Ness, Luigi, and Captain Falcon.
Jiggly can be unlocked by winning the game your first time...
Ness can be unlocked by winning on Normal/Hard with 3 lives not lost ( no Continue)
Luigi can be unlocked by completing all target practices for all nonunlockable characters (or practice 1)

Captain Falcon can be unlocked by completing the game in less than 20 minutes....

Hope this helps (and this is for the N64 smash bros.)
