Well there are many different levels of EMO, I wouldn't classify greenday as emo (at least thier first stuff) if your gonna be B R O A D about the definition of EMO then I guess you could say that its any music thats about EMOTION? Well that doens't make sense, because all music has emotion.

So in saying emotion most popular culture considers it WOE IS ME, THE WORLD IS ENDING, MY GF BROKE UP WITH ME SO I"M GONNA KILL PEOPLE... stuff like that.

LIke I have an EMO friend, and he went out with a girl like a year ago, and he is still moping about how she broke his heart yadda yadda yadda, when it was over before it began.

Greenday isn't Emo, they are hardcore punk, there is a difference.. Emo's are the whiney cry-p****s.. Where punks screw crud up, and reak havok, and complain about their own culture.. (American Idiot, that whole CD was a slam on our culture... They are no better than Micheal Moore)

So someone (and all of my google searches.. and neos searches) agrees that they arnt emo. Thank you!.

also, whats the difference between an emo and a goth... the only possible thing i could thing of goths are slightly happier and into weird stuff... like witchcraft

i was listening to an episode of the O.C. in the backround of doing something, and some chick blasts summer saying she can go hang out with her emo boyfriend... and i thought, he's considered emo? wtf? maybe like 1/6 emo, which is weak... and like 3/6 nerd... and 2/6... whatever... cool guy i guess...
the point being if thats what and emo is persieved to be by the media thats so weak....

There is emo appearance. Black hair, sorta goen over face, like hoppy. And dressing somewhat like hoppy, is like emo.

Basically if a I was going to call somone EMO, they would have to have crazy emotional reactions to everyday mundane things. Or... listen to emo.

If I was going to call somone GOTH, they would always have to wear black... and thats about it. I don't know if the whole "Against populare culture thing" is necessary to be goth. I KNOW that wicca witchcraft blackmagic etc. arn't necessary.

I guess the only REAL difference between and Emo and a Punk and a Goth are different personality traits...

Emo- Whiney cry-p****, usually hate their lives, and scream for attension by pretending to cut wrists and stuff

Punks- Brutal, Anarachist spirit, usually anti-republican.. Does crazy stuff for no reason...

Goths- Usually the most quiet of the 3, Very self-centered, and usually anti-religion..
