Javascript-bad idea. Not everybody has Javascript enabled in their browser. Same with Flash. You need to download Flash for the most part to get it to work right on a new OS.

PHP you can control, because it's all on the server. You certainly COULD program a MUD-like RPG in Javascript, don't let me stop you. But PHP will produce better results, and they will be more in synch with our characters here on the boards, since we are all little PHP bots already.

MUD is a Multi-user dungeon/dimension. That means there are different areas (like the board has different areas for Videogames, General discussion, and Specific Topics)... And in each of the areas, you may encounter shopkeepers or creatures or other players (Sort of like what happens when you see "4 users currently online: BigBob85, Davideo7, IceWave04, Lowell" at the top of the screen when you log in, only, you notice them more.

Not quite a 'mud' system, but more of something like Neopets has, when you enter an area and something random happens "You stumble across a free Omelette" or something dumb. Only here it would be "You get attacked by 15 Ogres. Fight or flee?"

And when you click on something(Any other link on the page, in fact) that's not "Fight" or "Flee", then the ogres attack you or use magic. If you're not careful with your hitpoints, you could end up revived by the NPC Priest in the Christianity thread (aka the Church)...

Of course, there would be no creatures in the Town Square (Newbie forums, general chat, Chrono Petition) but outside in VizzedVille, you could get attacked by bandits or something.
