I've lived in about 15 different houses in my life and only 2 of those had a dishwashing machine. I've lived at this house for about 4 years now and we do not have a dishwashing machine. I actually prefer doing dishes by hand because I'm really fast at it and I know I get them clean. I've been in plenty of peoples houses who use dishwashing machines and grabbed a plate with food still on it or pulled out 2 spoons stuck together by food and I think that's disgusting. It makes me not want to use their dishes then. Even when I had a dishwashing machine I still ended up doing them by hand first before I ran them through.

We have a dishwasher, but there are also a lot of dishes that can't go in a dishwasher, so we use both. We wash most of our plastic dishes/containers in the sink, since the hot water and detergent in a dishwasher can damage them over time or even cause them to melt. Same goes for expensive pots and pans, especially Teflon pans.
