http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/13/us-japan-quake-idUSTRE72A0SS20110313?pageNumber=1

Nuclear plant threat seems to have been averted, but death toll now about 10,000 as the population of one entire town remains unaccounted for.

pikamander64 : Natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis have been terrorizing mankind since we dwelt in caves. The difference now is that people don't immediately run for higher ground after a quake because they trust technology to keep them safe and don't even bother to check the news reports. And then there are the idiots in California that ran to the beach with surfboards when they heard about the tsunami watch....

EDIT: Here is an interesting bit of photography by the New York Times that takes a before and after look at cities hit by the quake and tsunami.

FrankThePunisherCastle : I think those are the "official" numbers.... what has been reported.

I think the number of missing should be above 10,000. If you look at some of the images coming out of Japan of the coastal towns it only makes sense that 10,000+ are missing/dead.

girachu852 : volunteer work and donations. There are people gathering blankets and canned goods to send over with the Red Cross, there are people gathering money to donate to relief funds, there are groups mobilizing to go over and help rebuild... there are a lot of things that can be done here in America to help, you just have to look.

So they added to the page I posted before... wow, the nuclear plant one really shows just how much damage has happened.

EDIT: Apparently they have upgraded the quake once more, now listing it as a 9.0

yeah, I stole that link from you too I guess.

I've seen it posted by a few people today. And yeah, there are a half dozen more pictures than there were this morning. Crazy amounts of damage. Way more than 10,000 dead after that.

Yeah, it is a really big thing to see.

So... yeah...the quake shifted Japan's coast 8 feet and tilted the earth's axis.

As if Daylight Saving's Time wasn't shortening it enough.... (<--feeble attempt at humor to make it look a bit less bleak)

Oh... and Aflac has fired Gilbert Gottfreid as the voice of the Duck for making jokes about the disaster on his Twitter page. While he is not the voice of the Duck in Japan, Aflac does do 75% of their business there, plus they felt that Gottfreid's jokes were very inappropriate.

Well, historically the Japanese have always been known for their sense of stoicism, and I think this is just another example of it. I am very impressed indeed... if this had happened in America you just know there would be chaos and mass looting going on.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/dog-in-japan-stays-by-the-side-of-its-ailing-friend-in-the-rubble

I had to post this link... it is so easy to forget that among the thousands of dead and missing that there are also numerous animal victims as well.

Update on the Radiation Problems

For those that don't know and/or have not been clicking the links... the quake is now listed as a 9.0 and the casualties are estimated at 27,500 dead or missing. Radiation levels outside the plant are elevated but still within normal worldwide levels.
