I heard about a sign in a shop window that said "Orange Juice or Beer, which is better for you?" the shop sold both beverages, so I think the shop owner was crazy, he even went to the trouble of getting the signs printed.

I think the answer is obvious.

I can't see beer having much nutritional value, if any. It's empty calories and carbs that will make you gain weight if you drink it regularly.

A glass of 100% orange juice contains up to 200% of your vitamin C (obviously), it is also a source of potassium and folate - This means it will help you better absorb any iron you may eat in the same meal. Some orange juice is even fortified with Vitamin D and Calcium to have the same minerals as a glass of fortified milk. Each cup of orange juice counts as a serving of fruit.

I don't like beer, it's too bitter for me. Besides beer isn't as good for your health as a fresh orange juice
So my vote goes to orange juice.

How is this even a legitimate question? If you drink too much Beer, you die. I haven't heard of that happening to Orange Juice drinkers before, ever. (I have heard of two cases where the people somehow killed themselves by drinking too much water too fast though. Not sure how they pulled that off...)

Beer and all alcohol beverages have this distinct, bitter taste that makes me regurgitate.
I haven't drank alcohol since my teen years..

Orange juice is delicious, especially with a big bowl of cereal.

Beer and wine might prevent cancer but I think vitamin C in OJ might prevent almost everything. And beer dehydrates you alot.

Yeah this is kind of an obvious answer, but a question is a question. My answer is Orange juice because its nutritional, healthy, and you cant die from it usually.

http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-sci-juice8-2009nov08,0,5809992,full.story

I found this article, I wonder if other Vizzed readers had come across it? I guess the writers concerns are to do with the amount of sugar in Orange Juice which is far higher than if you were to just simply eat some oranges and drink water which we did in the past and we would never eat as many oranges that went into a glass of juice anyway.

I guess a healthy amount would be the juice of 2 squeezed oranges in a glass of water, but the producers know that that would not be sweet enough for the modern tastes of a generation raised on soda so they ensure that it through their methods of processing is far sweeter. They are never going to encourage you to water down a third of the juice to two thirds of water as that would make the juice last longer and impinge on their profits.

As for the Vitamin C debate, most juices have to be re-fortified with vitamin C as pasturization kills it and if we consume to much we simply flush it out when we go to the bathroom.

It would appear therefore that OJ is as much a case of market push rather than market pull, if we were really concerned about its health benefits we would dilute it like concentrate, but if that would be too unpalatable then we should just accept then as is it contains as much sugar as the average soda and contains no fibre, given the increase in bowl cancer I think we should be far more concerned with that and considering Vit C added to nearly everything these days including cereal which is just in most cases crunchy candy, we are hardly going to die of Scurvy and no amount of free radicals are goi
ng to prevent bowl cancer in an overly loaded carbohydrate diet comprised of mostly refined sugars, fats and proteins with very little soluble fibre.

What are your thoughts?
