I don't see why it has to be one or the other. To be completely honest, I actually "prefer" being able to watch both. I love Star Wars, and it's a completely great movie. Yeah, the whole "hero's journey" is a played out idea, but you know what? It took that old format, and made it something new and amazing. Star Wars did something that nobody thought could be done, and at the time, nobody had even though of to think it couldn't be done! There's a sense of action about these movies, you move swiftly from Luke learning about his Jedi powers, to rushing into the Death Star to save the princess, and then right into the rebel attack! It's a great film with a very nice, evenly flowing plot.

But I also love Star Trek. But the action here isn't what's important. Star Trek isn't an adventure story, it's a story of personal conflict. It's a dream for what humanity can some day be, a light by which to guide or path to the future. In Star Trek, every character faces a difficulty that he or she can not easily over come, and may end up making the wrong decisions and getting hurt, or hurting others, but the main point is that the character comes back stronger for it.

Even though superficially, they're both space-travel stories, they're fundamentally different, and to compare them is to rob each of their respective majesties.
