For me it was The Simpsons: Hit And Run. When I first bought that game I thought it would be a totally crappy Simpsons spinoff game like Simpsons Wrestling or Simpsons Skateboarding. It was actually really fun and I beat it in 2 days. What about you?

It'd probably have to be Golden Sun for GBA. I saw screenshots of it on the web before I bought it and it looked like it would be crappy because of the way the characters looked like Lego men or something. However, I saw it at a game store a while back for only $10 used, so why not?

It actually turned out to have a good storyline and battle system. The gameplay is good too with the ability to use magic outside of battles to interact with the environment. Goes to show that you can't judge a game sometimes by what it looks like, until you've played it.

Back when I was a kid, my brother reserved the original Super Smash Bros. I thought he was being stupid and the game would be a waste of money. Now Brawl is one of my favorite games ever. No one I know can beat me in any of the three games. My brother won't even play against me because I'm "going to win anyway so why bother?"

So, yeah. Smash Bros is great and I predicted it would be crap.

Peter Jackson's King Kong. I got the XBox version with our XBox from a friend, but had no idea that it was more than a crappy movie tie-in. Pretty fun shooter, although I'll have to let you know about the Kong action segments when I get there .

I thought the Tekken game for gameboy (I think) would just only because of the console.
I don't play on handhelds often because they're so small...I figured it would be boring and crappy looking. I was wrong...in fact I think it's better than the Tekken for Playstation.

Megaman X4. I thought it would be exactly like every other Megaman game out there, and it was, but it was playable. Instead of dying over and over again by various means, I could actually get past stages without dying (sometimes). This is the first Megaman game I ever beat.

I saw the advertisements for Brutal Legend and totally convinced myself that Jack Black single-handedly created the worst game ever. I bought it anyway, just for the soundtrack. Turns out, it wasn't anywhere near the apocalyptic pile of orangutan poo that I thought it would be. It's pretty good, with decent replayability and a respectable RTS mode.
