For those of you who were addicted to Tetris like I and a lot of my family were back in the 80s, I thought I would pass along that a new version of Tetris is now available on PS3 via Playstation Network.

My initial impressions of the new version are very positive. This version is made by EA and they did a really good job of keeping that authentic look to the game though obviously updating it.

I haven’t had a chance to play all modes yet but they do have an interesting multiplayer mode which I assume would be for online rankings and such. I wasn’t planning on buying anything new for my console but when I saw this tonight I couldn’t resist.
The game is only $10 via PSN. I recommend checking it out.

M!cH@3l 001 : Yes I knew that, plays the original Nintendo version quite often when I am on this site… I am very impressed with the latest version though and even more impressed that since they did not release the game via disc that the game was reasonably priced.

What I really like about the new version is EA did a really good job at keeping an authentic look to the game and didn’t really try to reinvent the game to something more of their creation. There is even an updated version of the original theme that was used in the 80s.

So far the only mode I have really gotten into is the unlimited “Marathon” mode which is essentially the original mode from the original game but, has extra points for double and triple or better lines and such. So far I have managed to get to level five the interface is a lot faster as compared to the original so I was actually surprised I was able to get to level five so quickly.

Xado_Shikazo : I know how it feels to not have something that is considered the “In” thing and such. I have a PS3 but I don’t really play much with a few exceptions loves the Fight Night series and plays MLB The Show. I primarily use it as an alternative to view webcasts of fights that I cover and such. It would be nice if I could afford to by some of the newer games that’s one reason why when I saw that they released Tetris and saw how low the price was I couldn’t resist and frankly it shocks me given how popular the game has always been that they didn’t release this on a disc and didn’t charge upwards of $60 for it. I was happy that for once I was able to get a deal I could afford but again it surprised me given that EA is behind the series now.

I love Tetris! It's definitely among my favourites. Sadly, I do not own a PS3. Maybe when I get my job I can save up for one. Thanks for informing me of this recent development. I don't see my best friend very often (her school, work, etc.), however, she does have a PS3. If I bought one, we could play online. The price is right!

Meh, this doesn't really affect me in any way. I never really liked Tetris, I never saw what the big thrill about it is.

jmc1097 : I don’t think thrills are necessarily what comes to mind when one thinks of Tetris. I know that when I was a kid when the original game came out it was frustrating for a while to get the hang of the game but for some it is good for testing your hand/eye accord nation etc.

It is also good for trying to beat your own or other’s top scores. It’s definitely a classic that I’m happy to see brought back I would feel the same way about Pac Man or Ms. Pac Man and I’m sure that there are plenty of kids whom don’t see the appeal of that game probably because they grew up in a generation where games are far more advanced compared to what games were when I and others whom are old enough to remember, grew up with.

I am a mark for 80s nostalgia.

hackerman : EA did a really good job reviving it… I play marathon mode most of the time (when I have time to play and am not playing Fight Night.) which is basically a revival of the original endless mode from the original game in the 80s.

I have had some time to check out some other the multiplayer modes and they are very difficult because there are a few that come in variations and at fast speeds. As I said before I am surprised that they didn’t release this on a disc given the loyal following the game has had since the 80s and also I couldn’t believe how affordable it was. It is a rarity for me to buy something spontaneously especially given the typical price of most games today but when I saw how affordable it was I jumped at it.

For $10 it’s definitely worth giving a look for those of you whom don’t see the popularity of the game from previous incarnations. I wish it was fiscally responsible for me to pre-order most of the new games including some of the games that are coming out soon. In my case to have a game that I thoroughly enjoyed when I was growing up revived in a good way and at an affordable price I thought of it as a good thing to do something I rarely do, spoil myself.

hackerman : Well if they had PS2 compatibility that would be one thing because if memory serves me they had a version of pac man on PS2 a while back. It’s a shame they don’t have PS2 compatibility in the PS3 slim. There are a lot of games I’d like to see revived. I am curious to check out the latest fight night when it’s released. It kind of stinks that they’re releasing that so close to when their releasing the new MLB the show but it should be fun trying to figure that one out. Speaking of games that they should revive that are similar to tetris anyone here a Columns fan?

pacman1755 : I agree it’s fun to play periodically during my days off. What I like is the EA features where you can rank against other players world wide. So far I can reach level seven pretty much every time I play assuming I don’t play when I can barely keep my eyes open. (It happens from time to time because I work odd hours.) I did reach level nine twice though. I hope they keep the franchise going it truly is one of the most iconic games one can mention in terms of the history of video games right up there with Pac-Man or even pong, which in itself was very addicting in it’s time.

Wow, this new installment of Tetris actually looks really nice. There have been a ton of them in the past, and I have at least 4 of them, but this looks the cleanest and most addicting version.

Someone70 : I think
this version although licensed and developed by EA has a lot of the original
people involved who were responsible for original Nintendo version in the
80's.

I cannot tell you how many hours
especially after a surgery in my house, especially when I lived up north and
were snowed in. Priceless memories of the 80s that I wish I could relive again.

I wasn’t
good at all at the original version for a long time so I spent countless hours
playing that one.Basically the three
games I really played were that, Mike Tyson’s Punchout and, Bases Loaded.Even now with all the technology we have I
still love the classics.

Once an
80’s mark, always an 80’s.
