Feel free to post your own criteria for art and discuss them with other users. Ever since I became aware of the "are video games art?" argument a few years ago, I began to wonder what defined art. I believe I have found my own personal definition of art: to me art is any form of human expression (literature, painting, music, or game) that is able to convey emotions, ideals, or even philosophies through the complexity(or simplicity)of it's use of it's resources, or the creativity/ingenuity of how it employs it's resources old and new, and what new ideas it brings to the table.

I like your definition.

Basically, taste constitutes art.

EDIT: and oh yes, of course - time.

Creativity is what art is made out of. It's constituted by being eccentric.

I art is anything that was trying to do something diffrent and is accepted/rejected by many and is the copied after being made. For a second opinion though... my life drawing teacher said that the word art has been used for so many things that people have no idea how to describe what is or isnt art. Im starting to think everyone has there own idea of what is or isnt art and it will stay that way.

I agree with your first post, art is very subjective.

Personally I think video games certainly are an art form, there is a huge amount of time and effort invested in the visual components of the game, as well as the cover art, promotional art, trailers, etc. A huge part of it is digital art - Painting skins for 3D models, matte paintings for backgrounds, and painting textures for other visual elements. Not to mention many videogames often include voice acting and original soundtracks. Just because they have an entertainment value doesn't mean they are not art - If anything, that is a plus, because the audience gets to interact with it.

I think people don't realize what art really is. Life = art, take a look around and name one thing that is not art. People say art is only human made I say they need to open their eyes and look around there is art everywherrreee!

I believe that everything is art like the above comment said, but, I believe that art can be categorized... Not "Good," or "Bad," but "Visual," or "Performing."

Visual arts include anything that takes time that you can see with your eyes and remains in one place. From the Mona Lisa, to the alphabet, to your trashcan... It's art, alright. Easy and simple. Well, for the most part.

Performing arts include people well, performing, so that people can see or hear what they do. I think this one is a tad bit more complex to explain, at least personally, since there is all the sorts of dance, singing, theatre... And then there's panta-miming (Not spelling right, but not exactly sure how it really is).

I think that video games is definitely a form of visual art. The reason I say this is because yes, it is visual art because they had to draw for it, they had to design for it, every single little tiny detail... Even the dialog is art.

But, there is some art that's difficult to explain.
Does this mean you'd consider the leftovers in your fridge, art?
You could, because it is something visually appealing (or unappealing depending on how old it is ) to the eye.

But, everyone has a different opinion on what art really is. For example, someone might spill their coffee on a piece of paper. One person might say, "Oh shoot, something to clean up," while someone else might say "That is art." Art is an extremely grey area for people, since there really is no right or wrong answer.
Unless you answer something extremely dumb, like cat. I mean... I guess a cat could be art, but if you don't explain WHY, it's kind of dumb.

I guess anything that you can argue that it is art... It is.

JigSaw : I agree Jigsaw, nature is more beautiful than what humans create in so many ways. I think people need to have a better appreciation for it
