When I was laid off about a year or so ago I had to send out like 100 resumes. Heck I had to send out a bunch before I even got called back. The economy is rough out there if you live in the US.

The best advice I can give is to make sure that you have a decent cover letter to your resume as well. Cover letters have become extremely important over the years for some reason...

Probably about a million applications and double the phone calls. If you don't prove that you really want the job, you won't get it. I don't see how that matters for us people with GED's and no college experience. We're going to be stuck working in shi**y jobs anyway.

I'm self employed now but my last job was working as a "Application Analyst" (basically my role was lead web designer) and I only had to apply to 2 places before I got a job. It definitely helps when you have a lot of portfolio work.

Totts : Well it’s been years since my last steady “Regular” job… I am a writer so I tend to focus more on getting exposure and hoping that it will lead to some lucrative opportunities for me down the line. I worked for a magazine for seven years so I guess I could say that in regard to my writing that once I’m in the door so to speak I tend to build a relationship with those I work with.

The only drawback to that is although you may be friendly with those you either work with or work for, unless you have a contract it can be very difficult to make steady money as a freelancer. This is one reason why I am strongly considering joining a writer’s union sometime this year because after 15 years and pretty much doing it full time for 10 years I think it’s time I get the opportunities that I deserve.

What makes it a little harder for me is that I am physically disabled so I have limitations physically of what I can and can’t do so that in turn limits my aspects for a “Regular” job though if I did not have the physical limitations I would gladly take a job at Walmart if the opportunity presented itself.

What’s bad about where I live is the number one industry here is telemarketing and there’s the mentality that those are the only things that disabled people can do. I’ve tried a couple of times to do telemarketing work and I didn’t last long maybe a day or two at most. I just don’t feel comfortable with lying and manipulating people and that from my experience is what telemarketing is all about.

I did work for an office though from my house doing check verification work. The job itself wasn’t bad but it became fiscally irresponsible for me to stay at that job for how much money I was making at the time and how much I should have been making.

I'd say I did atleast seven and no job so far. No jobs so far.

I guess that's just the name of the game now. Be better than everybody else. Perhaps it would help to stretch the truth when it came to answering such questions as "How good are you at using Microsoft Excel". But obviously not for yes or no questions, just things of "amount" of skill that wouldn't be to obvious.
