In France they say NON, religion should not be in politics.
In the Uk they have the Lords spiritual.
And in the US, well we know what is happning in the US.

So my question to you and the point of discussion here is, should decisions be guided my religion, whose religion? or placed pramatically on meeting the needs of the people, all people united under the umbrella of a nation.

Personally I don't think religion should be involved in any decision making outside of your religion. That being said, it's hard to tell people to check their beliefs at the door.

I don't think so, mainly because religion is like a personal opinion to me. I don't think the world would be doing so good if this actually happened.

I personally don't think that religion should be involved in politics, mainly because not everyone is the same religion. It would be really insulting for the people who's believes aren't the religion that is being involved.

I'd say no, but not because I myself currently teeter somewhere between agnostic and atheist.

Everyone has there own set of beliefs, and we each belief has a tendency to contradict another persons belief. For example, say religion were in politics and someone was trying to pass a law, someones going to complain "It's against my religion".

well, it does really depend on how you view religion affecting politics. I don't have much of a problem with a lot of the religious values that the majority of religions hold.

Values expressed in things like the "Golden Rule" (which is present in nearly every religion) would go a long way in fixing problems. Unfortunately not enough people live the values they claim they hold.

And to be honest, the problem isn't religion in politics.... the problem is politics in general.

Religion will affect your worldview. You don't want to mix both religion and politics immensely but religion can help decide on a person political stance. If a persons worldview is wrong or cruel, it can point a person's political direction to the wrong direction.

For example, if you get into the topic of abortion, Christians are against it because of the worldview that everyone is created in the Image of God (Imago Dei). This is the belief that everyone is of great value.

play4fun : I don’t think that if someone happens to be religious that it is necessarily a bad thing. It can however raise certain conflicts if a person happens to be an elected official.

The problem is it seems that for a politician to be openly religious it gives fringe religious radical groups an excuse to either go against that person strictly based on religious beliefs if not any actual issue or, to jump on the bandwagon and likely exclude what ever issue that Politician may be behind.

The thing that many of these radical groups seem to forget is that there is in fact a separated between church and state in the United States and, I feel that one of the reasons why that is in place is because it ensures a somewhat level field to discuss issues regardless of what one’s religion may be.

NO. they separated religion from politics for a reason. It would cause so much problems in the nation that it would be unimaginable. There isn't just one religion here, it's a variety. Plus there are an abbundacy of those of which are atheists. So it would cause more drama. Plus, the religion side of the politics would try to overun the political side, and same the other way around, because they have different view points upon the world. You just can't have two different types of rule be placed together and hope they'll work things out. It's like getting a hybrid of a dog and cat. Anyways, I say ABSOLUTELY NOT towards the subject.

They make a good couple. Not trying to offend anyone but a lot of religions in general are fairy tales and lies to control people that is exactly what government is. They generate a story to run for office, people believe the story then vote for them and years later they forget it ever happened and they repeat it until they die.

The only difference between religion and government / politics is government is the actual physical format of religion. Hell is being behind bars or working you life for some corporation who will jerk you around and heaven is being rich or an insider in government.

And since government writes the laws and story, it makes them the god here and each and everyone of us are bowing down to them even if we don't believe in them. Sorry but religion in politics isn't your problem, government is what you need to be afraid of. Government is god and the politicians / parties = religions.

No, I firmly believe in a seperation of church and state. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion of prohibit the free exercise thereof." This basically means that Congress can't make a national religion for anyone to obey by, nor can they stop anyone from exercising their religion.

doepker : The way you defined separation of church and state (which I believe and support in that definition) does not say that religion should not be involved in politics.

A politician may use their religion to influence their personal decisions. Besides that religion should not be involved. It's just not appropriate.
