This is a question about Christian videogames (or the potential for them) but the question is for non-Christians here too.

If there were decent (meaning, entertaining) videogames that contain strong, overt, plainly Christian content, who here would play them? Further...if you're a Christian, would you play them because of the content? If you're not a Christian, would you play them in SPITE of the content? Would you say that it's just like every other religious overtone in games and you wouldn't care that it's in there?

This is a good opportunity to discuss the stance your parents might take on games too. Personally my parents have always been against stuff like RPGs that Square makes and so on...but they've known I'm mature enough to handle stuff like that. As for Christian games...the ones I've seen (mostly on PC) are just inexcusably lame beyond compare. However, I've always suspected that the market for them is there...just no quality product on that market.

Your thoughts?

If they were good I would play them. If there were two games that were both equally good, but one had Christian content I would chose it. If it wasn't quite as good, I might still make a point to play it because of it's content.
My parents don't know how deep video game stories go. So I guess it would be a plus, but they don't really how much the stories really speak about supernatural things.

The only problem I forsee is there are some many different thoughts on Christianity. Different groups have different ideas, so they would have to be pretty general things.

Michaels last point is the best point. No one person beliee the same thing. Chances r it would be a game about demons and angels.

I deffinately would try out a game if they made a game for xbox/ps2/gc, I probably would rent it first though, and than buy it if I liked it.

The only thing with a christian game is, alot of people now days like violence in their video games, they like to be able to kill things...and with a christian game, that obviously wouldn't be possible.
On the other hand, if you were to take certain events from the bible, and turn it into a game, than the "violence" might be more tolerated; for example, your david and you have a sling shot and you must take down this evil boss guy named goliath.

But yeah, if people were to make a christian game, they'd deffinately have to know what their doing, and to make sure that the game would be acceptable in the eyes of christ.

EDIT: very interesting topic by the way

Well, the specific idea I'm thinking of is what if a game was made of my book? Jullinar. The whole thing is about spiritual warfare, in a nutshell... Goes all the way from Creation to the battle of Armageddon. Anyway, I think the violence would be VERY much tolerated in this respect (as it's entirely angels against demons), and believe me, there is a LOT of it!

Yeah, it's just a matter of how you display the violence. You have any plans at all of making your book into a game using any programs out there? What genre?

Well, if I can find a team of developers crackpot enough to actually make the thing, you bet I'd do it!

Genre? It'd probably play similar to Spider-Man 2, follow-behind camera, free-exploring (and since you play as an angel, free-flying), with some RPG elements to it including experience and equipment...that kind o' stuff. Action RPG, basically. Secret Of Mana on steroids.

That's up to the programmers we don't have

Nope, probably no free game creation program... It'd be 3D and all that junk, so it'd have to be designed from scratch.

That goes beyond talents I have
I'm familiar with designing models in 3D, but not developing games in 3D.

Wells I remember playing several christian games for the gameboy and they were pretty cool. I think there names were Joshua and moses. ALso my friend has this angels and demons game for the pc that is pretty good. THis is what I envision for christian games...

Videogames aren't meant to educate. They are meant to enjoy. There are programs for the comptuer that you could technically call games but are not. They are to educate. The only real purpose I can see in christian videogames is to educate and keep kids away from the bad games. There are already alternatives for this anyway. This is what I would envision...

1. A gameshow type of thing on the net that you would compete on. You would be set with 4 other people. Your computer would be set up as a dummy recieving info so people can't cheat. And The computer/judge would ask you a question and you would buzz in. There could be a world championship and several different levels of quizing. Now these subjects wouldn't be contraversial really. Just solid facts that come out of a holy or NIV bible. Like How old was Methusala? Or who was jacobs father? Or what book of proverbs talks about what a good virtuous women should be.

2. A game Like LotR except it would be set when the isrialites conquer Cannaan. Third person of course. You could do different Era's like moses too. There was alot of killing in the old testament.... Like when Joshua killed 100 men and cut off thier foreskins?... That would be fun!

3. A Sim builder perhaps, where its in the old testament and you have to curb your cities sin or else it will burn in hell... Lets say for instance your witch pop gets out of hand... THEN IT GETS HIT BY A HUUUGE FIREBALL!

4. A game like Black and White except going through a regular life with a regular human. Or Perhaps and RPG were you have a dark and light slider like in KOTOR, except if you could follow the devil then it wouldn't be that chrirstain of a game.

5. I don't really know how you could work an MMO, mabey just favore in doing good deeds and knowing verses in the bible with god's favor. And you would have swords etc. etc.

6. You are a badass angel in the last days... Kill s***loads of demons NINJASTYLE!!! (Ninja Gaiden style)

I don't really think I could play a Christian video game. It would all seem really cheesy to me.
