~ Chapter 1 Home Sweet Hovel ~

Jack Ward stared around at the sullen, stricken faces of the crew members. The bridge of the U.S.S. Delta was bathed in crimson light, giving the room an ominous, surreal atmosphere. He could sense Krya's presence next to him, just as tense and apprehensive as himself. They were currently making their way down through the atmosphere, reentering somewhere over North America. Corporal Pierce, face taught with tension, gripped the handheld comms unit. He was speaking quietly and rapidly into it.

"I repeat, this is the speedship U.S.S. Delta, transmitting on all channels, to anyone. Is anyone left down there?" he cried, his voice rising in desperation.

"Another one just blew, sir." the Private whose name Jack had never learned grimly informed Pierce. The Corporal whipped his head towards the Private.

"Where?" he replied.

"South America. Brazil, it looks like. Wait, another one just went off in Italy."

"My God..."

"Why are they dropping so many nukes?" Kyra murmured softly.

"They're panicking." Pierce replied darkly. The bridge fell silent yet again save for the soft rumbling of the ship's hull as it entered the atmosphere. In the quietude, they broke through the low cloud cover and continued their descent towards the surface, near the heart of America. Pierce brought the radio to his mouth again.

"I repeat, this is the U.S.S. Delta, somebody answer me, dammit!" he snapped. Again, a static answer. Pierce slowly put down the radio on the console, replacing it to its place of origin.

"Maybe they're just too busy to answer." Jack murmured.

"Sure. Maybe they're all dead." Pierce replied glumly. Before Jack had a chance to answer, a sharp beeping suddenly filled the bridge.

"We've got incoming!" the Private cried out.

"What the hell is it?" Pierce snapped. Jack's eyes hunted through the front windows. He could imagine an army of Cacodemons rising up to meet them with a flurry of Lost Souls for back up. Instead, he saw a pair of bright lights streaking for them.

"Missiles. We've got auto-targeting missiles. They've locked onto us. I'm transmitting our code, but they don't seem to care..."

"This is a speedship, dammit. Outrun them, out maneuver them!" Pierce demanded.

"We're built as a speedship for space, not interplanetary maneuvers. Ten seconds to impact." Jack felt his stomach go cold. There was no way he was dying here, now, because of some damned missiles. Not after all he and Kyra had been through. Despite what the Private had said, he tore the ship into a dodge as quickly as he could. Too late. Ten seconds seemed like they went by way too fast, and a violent eruption across the back of the vessel sent everyone crashing to the ground.

"Damage report!" Pierce shouted, struggling to be heard over the shrieking alarms.

"Those goshdarned missiles vaporized the back half of the ship! We're in free fall! Everyone has to get to the escape pods!" the Private roared. Jack didn't need to be told twice. He was hauled roughly to his feet by Kyra and given a good shove towards the door. He took a quick look around the bridge. Two of the bridge crew were on the ground and not getting up. Pierce was knelt by one, checking his pulse. He looked unhappy. The unnamed Private began making his way towards them when suddenly one of the control consoles overloaded and burst into flame. His pained shrieks were short lived as he was thrown flaming into a nearby wall.

Pierce abandoned the pair of bodies and hurried to catch up with Kyra and Jack. Together, the trio made their way through the corridor beyond. The ship's rumble was more violent than ever, now feeling unnatural and dangerous. Now that they were out in the corridor, wind shrieked by them from the torn open hull.

"Was there anyone else on the ship!" Jack cried.

"Negative! The entire crew was on the bridge! We had a skeleton crew!" Pierce shouted back. Jack nodded grimly. It was just the three of them now. Not a good way to start his return to Earth. Fire and blood. Jack was following Pierce's lead now, as he was the only one who knew the way to the escape pods. They silently made their way through the vessel, merely focusing on staying alive at this point.

They pounded down the corridor and took a hard right. Just as they did, the ship decided to roll sharply onto its side, causing the trio to slam into the wall. Jack grunted in pain, but pushed himself up and pressed on with the others. He couldn't believe this. He had waded through oceans of blood, fields of corpses, clouds of bullets and hundreds of demons only to now have to be rushing through a crashing ship as his welcome home to Earth.

"Who the hell would even be shooting at us?" Jack roared in sudden anger as they took a shortcut to the pods through the infirmary. Supplies were scattered all over the place. Jack suddenly wished he had grabbed his armor and a bigger arsenal, but was thankful that at least he'd managed to holster his pistol and throw on a proper uniform.

"Again, panic. They're all panicking down there. They must've set off the missiles without even thinking. Or maybe the demons have control...you said there was intelligence behind them." Pierce replied ominously. He opened the corresponding door on the other side of the infirmary. Jack shuddered at the thought.

"It's possible." he admitted. If they had invaded Earth, God alone knew what else they were capable of. Their journey was nearly complete, Pierce informed them. The ship was shaking worse than ever now, and their plummet had to end sometime. Jack had no intentions of being on the ship at that time.

"Here!" Pierce suddenly cried. They bolted through a door as he opened it and they came into the squalid escape pod bay. There were three. Pierce rushed up to one and worked the control to open it. As he pressed the button to open the doors, the whole console abruptly overloaded and ruptured. The resulting explosion doused Pierce in flame and he roared in furious pain as he was thrown across the room. His smoking, charred corpse slammed into the far wall, dead before he hit the ground. Blake and Kyra didn't waste a second.

The pair hurried up to the second pod and hit the activation button. The doors snapped open and the pair hurried inside. Jack being first, he began rushing through the warm up sequence. The pod was a squalid thing, taller than it was wide. It could hold a maximum of four people, if you managed to squeeze everyone in. The door snapped shut behind him and in a blast of motion, the pod shot itself out from the ship.

The pair turned to briefly watch the ship as it crashed below. They were barely five hundred feet from the surface. Within seconds it plunged and smashed into the ground. Jack returned his attention to the controls. Their initial blast had given them several seconds aloft in the air, but that was quickly fading. Soon, they would be falling as fast as the ship.

"Where the hell are we?" Kyra cried. Jack had barely risked a glance at the navigation screens as he did his best to pilot the vessel down to the ground while mitigating the impact. He was failing.

"Looks like somewhere in the middle of Kansas!" he roared. Suddenly, the ground rushed up to meet them. Jack felt gravity catch up with him as both he and Kyra smashed to the ground.

Darkness instantly consumed his vision.

Yes I did it was posted awhile back so I decided to repost it so people would become interested in the story again.

~ Chapter 2 - Earth ~

Pain. It was the first thing he was aware of. But, then again, it was his life lately. Jack felt a groan escape his throat. He was sprawled out on the cold, hard metallic floor of the escape pod, tangled up with Kyra. At least it wasn't a totally unpleasant experience. She was still passed out. Jack untangled himself and slowly stood. His head throbbed, and his body ached, but he was certain he hadn't broken anything. Which was a start. Maybe luck had found him after all. Jack tore a medikit off the wall and popped it open.

Pulling out a general stimulant, he injected a small amount into Kyra to wake her up and replaced the stimulant, then attached the medikit to his belt.

"What happened?" she asked, jerking awake, eyes wide and jerking around.

"We crashed. Get up." Jack replied, not unkindly. He pulled her to her feet and popped the hatch. Fresh air wafted into the pod, igniting their nostrils and brightening their gazes.

"Home..." Kyra whispered, and all but fell out of the pod. Jack wasn't far behind her. There was something to be said for suddenly finding yourself in the middle of a vast, empty field after spending so long in space, environmentally sealed environments or Hell itself. They might be tired, injured and terrified that the Earth had fallen to the Forces of Hell...but they were home, dammit. The bright sunshine, the fresh air...and not a snapping Demon or screaming CyberDemon in sight to ruin their fun. Jack felt like a kid again as he and Kyra suddenly broke out into a run along the empty field. There weren't even any structures in sight and he was sure there was no toxic fallout around. He chased Kyra around for a while and laughed along with her.

He wasn't sure how long this went on for, but eventually the pair collapsed amongst the fresh, overgrown grass and laid there for even longer.

"It feels great to be back." Jack sighed happily.

"Yeah, it really does. When I shipped up to Mars, I was happy to get away from Earth. But now...I don't know why I ever wanted to leave in the first place." Kyra replied dreamily.

"Politics. Always politics. That's what drove me away...well, that and some poor choices. As if I had a choice of whether or not to go to Mars." Jack said dourly. Kyra sat up and glanced over at him.

"I'm glad you went." she said. Jack felt an unusual amount of emotion coming from his fellow Marine. The way she looked at him, her short, black hair tousled by the soft breeze. Where did they stand, exactly?

"I'm glad, too." he replied finally, and meant it. He'd had a chance to redeem himself, blast away a legion of the damned and meet one awesome woman. They both stood up after that, deciding that they'd had enough of a rest. It was time to get back to work. The pair retraced their steps back to the pod and did a thorough search of it. Unfortunately, all there was to salvage was the medikit that Jack already had hold of.

The pair exited the pod and looked around. It was hard to miss their next objective: get to the remains of their ship. They'd be dead in the water without a weapon to their name. Hell, they didn't even have combat knives. Jack would kill to wrap his hands around a pump action. Hell, even a simple sidearm would make him feel much more at ease. The two began to plod across the great, empty fields towards the rising pillar of smoke in the not so distance. As they walked in silence, Jack glanced casually over at Kyra.

He wasn't entirely sure what to think about her. They were connected, there was no doubt about it. But what did that mean? They still had a choice how to look at it. Jack had to be honest with himself. He was attracted to her. And he respected her. She was a damned good warrior, a great fighter. She could spit in death's face as fast as he could. They had fought and bled together for what felt like an eternity. They had defeated the forces of Hell in outer space and now they were taking the fight to the surface of their own homeworld.

The more Jack thought about it, the more he realized he liked her. And, he had to be honest with himself, what other kind of woman would take him? He'd known for quite a while that he would fall for a Marine babe, and Kyra seemed to like him. At least, he hoped so. Jack felt he was thinking too much on the subject. He would see how it all played out over the next however long. Knowing his luck, he'd be killed by killer things from Hell first. Or maybe Kyra would tell him how she felt and save him the embarrassment of spilling his guts. He was never very good with that kind of thing and tended to get all inarticulate.

They finally reached the twisted, smoking remains of the Delta and crawled into the torn open hull. The back half had been vaporized by the missiles, but that still left a decent portion of the vessel left. Climbing in, the pair found themselves in a short corridor.

"Let's split up and search, we'll cover more ground that way." Jack said. Kyra nodded in agreement. Jack entered the first room he came to: the infirmary. It was a godforsaken mess and it looked like most of the supplies had been ruined in the crash. Jack spent a little while picking through it all. All he managed for his trouble was about a stimpack worth of medical equipment. Attaching it to his belt, he pressed on. He was heading for the dormitories, where he and Kyra had stayed. He was sure he'd left his armor in there and she had too.

He came to a small corridor packed with doors and popped theirs open after a moment's search. Everything was a total mess, just as he'd expected, but all his armor was there. He quickly began pulling it on, finding it all in working order. He even found his pistol! Holster, extra clip and all. He attached it all to his armor and prayed for a backpack. No such luck. But Kyra showed up not too much later and appropriated her own set of armor. Jack spent a few seconds appreciating how good she looked in it before they exited their dorm.

"Any luck so far?" he asked.

"Nope. Let's search these dorms and keep going." Kyra replied. The pair pressed on, methodically hunting through each of the living quarters. Unfortunately, all they managed to secure was a second pistol with another spare clip. Jack did, however, managed to locate his missing backpack. He secured the medikit and stimpack in it, then shrugged into it. The pair pressed on through the silent, steel corridors. Soon, they made their final approach to the bridge. At least, what was left of it.

It turned out that, surprise, surprise, Kyra had more technological experience than Jack. She seemed like a girl with brains to match her fighting skills. Jack was only good at pointing and shooting. He'd never much been into electronic gear beyond gaming. He watched while she worked what was left of the navigation console and scanning systems. She toiled silently, working the controls in intense concentration.

Before long, she had some answers, not all of them good.

"It looks like we crashed almost smack dab in the middle of Kansas. Depending on the varying conditions, we're about a five days walk from Metropolis." she explained. Jack felt a mixture of emotions. Metropolis was his hometown. Being the capital of Kansas, it had a population well over fifteen million. It was a massive, sprawling city that was known for having one of, if not the, largest starport on Earth. There was no doubt in his mind it was a major point of the invasion. He could already picture it: burning buildings, rivers of blood, fields of bodies and demons, demons, demons as far as they eye could see...

But there was still hope. There had to be. Otherwise, what was the point? Kyra finished up with the navigational computer and turned to face him.

"So, we hit Metropolis, see what's up?" she asked. He nodded.

"Yeah. It's got basically the biggest starport on Earth. I'm sure there will be some sort of resistance around, unless things are worse than we thought." Jack replied.

"Alright, let's go."

As it turned out, they had about five hours before nightfall. They decided to make camp when they managed to come across a very long abandoned farmhouse. Jack was surprised to find it. It must have been at least a hundred years old, if not older. Everything was pretty ancient, but it was enough. There was no food left, but the pair ate from some of the MREs they'd managed to salvage from the messhall of the Delta before they'd gone.

Over dinner, they talked a little bit more. Jack shamefacedly admitted to Kyra the reason he ended up on Mars in the first place, and she laughed at his plight and gave him a bit of trouble for it. A reaction he found pleasant, she didn't judge him or shy away from him after that. She really didn't seem to mind. She talked about joining the Marines and all the bulls*** she'd had to put up with going through basic and her first few months after that. A lot of men were threatened by her physical prowess and she'd kicked her way through most of it.

After dinner, the pair retired up to the best looking bedroom in the house, which wasn't saying much. They stripped of their armor and dusted out the blankets and laid down. Jack felt a little more nervous this time round. The first time they'd slept in the same bed together, they'd both been way too tired to even consider social awkwardness. Tired as they both were, there was room for it now. Jack caught Kyra staring at him intently and returned her gaze. Neither of them spoke for several moments before Kyra killed the silence.

"Let's have sex." she said bluntly. Jack raised his eyebrows slightly at it. He hadn't expected her to say it quite like that. She grinned devilishly at his response, or rather, lack of one. "I'm sorry if I'm a little too straightforward. It's just...I really like you, a lot. More than a lot. And I think it's something we should have done back on the Delta. But we were just too wiped for it...if you don't want to, we don't have to." she said.

"No, I'd like to. I really would. This is just a bit more...blunt, than I'm used to, I guess. Yeah, I'd love to. I don't have any rubbers on me at the moment, though..." Kyra smiled.

"Don't worry about that. I'm on the five year plan." she replied. Jack knew what she meant. Joining the Marines, each female was offered the possibility of the five year plan. Essentially, they were given an injection that would make them infertile for five years. It was foolproof, as the Marines was full of fools. Jack couldn't help but grin.

"Well...let's get to it."

For the first time in his life, Jack Ward didn't merely have sex. He made love.
