After all my years using RM 95 I've never encountered this problem. How do I make certain tiles possible for NPCs to go over but will be inaccessible for vehicles (e.g. a flight of steps that you can't go over in a car?)
I'm really stumped over this.

You might think about setting up a switch that triggers whenever you're in the car. Such as "In Car" = on or whatever. Then, set up an event at the ends of the flight of stairs. Put the event in the same layer as player, so that it can't be walked over, only collided with. Then set the event's condition as "In Car" = on, so that the event won't be there when you're outside of the car. That should do it.

Or here's another idea...change the NPC type to "Wagon".
I'm sure you know how to change the type of terrain each map tile is...with the event type set to wagon for your vehicle or NPC, you can only drive over 'Flat Land', 'Marsh/Damp Ground', and 'Snowy Ground'. I'm actually not sure about 'Snowy Grounds' since thats the one that the Sled can only go on (and i'm not to sure about that either), but you'll just have to experiment to find out what the 'Wagon' type can go on.

I've never tried this stuff, so make sure to let us know about your results

Ok...I just remembered that when you have a Sled or Wagon type, you have something draging off you (you usually set this type to a horse, and he'll have a wagon or sled draging behind him).

Anyway, what Jake-A-Roonie said probably should work out best.

I tried Jake A Roonie's idea. The only problem is there's no way to turn the switch off when you get out of the vehicle. I suppose I could always let the car go up the steps. It is the BATMOBILE after all.

Hmm, I KNOW there's a way to do it... I had a complex system set up in RM2K3 for one game I did... The main character is an angel, and I needed a system so that the player could take off and start flying at any time, but still keep them from flying past critical events and stuff... I don't remember how I did it all though, it was over a year ago.

Not even close. I don't think I have it anymore... It was just way too much work, and I wasn't really sure where I was going with it. The events were a pain to set up. Since you can fly right over normal events, I had to set things as common events that would trigger when the player's position reached (x,y). But to do THAT, I had to set an event that would detect the player's position relative to the event.



Then I had issues with the angel taking off and landing. Obviously her flying mode was just programmed as getting into the airship... (It was just a question of having the airship "move with you" at all times.) And I could do it just fine where the player could reach over on the numeric pad and press the + sign to take off or land, but if I tried to make her take off during an event, her take-off animation wouldn't show, and her standing sprite would still be on the ground. Just all kinds of issues like that.

Probably the most I pulled off was having the angel go into God's throne room and she could fly around a bit...and then as she moved closer to or further away from God, the screen would get brighter or a little more dim depending on how close she was. (That was harder than you think.) Then her battle sprite (since this was RM2K3) was a heavily modified version of Nina in Breath Of Fire 2...



I would love to finish it someday, but I feel as limited as George Lucas did when he made the very first Star Wars. I don't have the resources to capture what I'm really picturing in my mind.



Besides, I really need to finish the book of this one before I work on the game...

Sounds really intriguing. I'd be delighted to read some of what you've written for the book version if you feel like you're in a place to show off your work to people. If not I can totally appreciate it. Very few people like to show a work in progress.
