Other reasons.... maybe someone doesn't like someone else and gave them thumbs down to "get them back" for whatever insult or imagined hurt they have.

But mostly thumbs are to be given for good posts and taken for bad ones. It's not a very important system and I believe David is planning to modify it somehow.

I would say everyone has their own personal reasons for rating down posts,
but I would also say these reasons would mostly include-
Bad spelling
Bad grammer
Spam posts
Stupid posts
Posts that the person rating disagrees with

You also may have those that have personal grudges like geeo says, but I dont know how often that happens if it does.
But a system like this is always open to being used in many ways, so the only thing I can say is just deal with it.
Or make better/friendlier/less controversial posts. Either/or, whichever you prefer

Yeah, the grudge thing does happen once in a while (I went from 7 to -4 in about a hour before). My advice for keeping your thumbs out of the negatives is stay out of the Debate and Christian forum and generally just be a nice person. Just don't worry to much about the thumb system though, it's not a great system at the moment.

I am open-minded so I would never give someone thumbs down for having a different opinion than mine. Also, if someone just copy/pastes long paragraphs from bulbapedia, etc. just to earn viz, I will usually give a warning before giving one thumbs down. You have the power to keep spammers in their place, just don't abuse the privilege.
