What are your favorite 80’s bands?

My personal top five

1.) The Cars
2.) Cheap Trick (Knows their considered a band from the 70s but they did carry well into the 80s and beyond)
3.) Survivor
4.) Starship
5.) Genesis

I could think of many more acts I like from my favorite decade but I figure this would be good for now…

My favorite 80's bands hmm tricky one. probaly have to go for iron maiden even thought they are still around but made it big in the 80's

Iron Maiden was good… I was thinking about the bands I listed in my top five, I can’t believe I didn’t put The Police in but then again I did say that there were so many bands/acts that I could think of. I think even those that people would consider one hit wonders would fit in this category because it’s amazing how you can remember one song that put a group or a person on the map then really can’t figure out what they did afterwards. The odd thing about one hit wonders of the 80s could probably hold their own if not blow away some of the music of today that for me seems too generic…


I know that people may disagree with that but I feel that the 80s is by far superior to today’s music.

Iron Maiden is my favorite band from the 1980's! Up the Irons!

I would probably have to say Metallica. They were the only band that I listened to for like a year.

NotJon : I agree, Metallica has to be one of the best bands ever as proven by their longevity. I think they are the only band I can think of out of the rock/metal/hair band genre that stayed together all this time and didn’t go on the reunion circuit. I kind of wished that Poison stayed together, they were one of my favorite rock/metal bands.

rbaranishyn : I wonder what ever happened to White Snake… I have heard that there were a couple of bands that made it big in the 80s that ended up being big draws in Europe after fizzling out in the U.S.. Rick Astley was good I think he is making a comeback of sorts because I remember seeing him during the Thanksgiving Day parade last year.

i would have to say bon jovi, van halen, and motley crue.

billythekidmonster : I agree with you… Those were definitely three of the top rock bands of the decade. Poison deserves to be in that group as well… It is amazing how much I find myself going on YouTube and looking up all the old videos of stuff from the 80s when I’m not using it as a research tool for my work.

I should have put Queen on my list, how could I mention the best anything in regard to music of the 80s and not put Queen on the list.

I know they were more of a late 70s band but they did carry on through the 80s and their still active today if I’m not mistaken. I just wish that DirecTV still carried the channels from Sirius radio. The stuff that they have on now isn’t bad but the Sirius/XM channels always play a lot of Queen on the 80s and blend channels.


Now that I think of it I think what I should have done for my list would probably be a top 25 type of deal seeing as there were so many acts that deserve recognition, Tears for Fears, Go West and, Midnight Oil come to mind.

It’s funny that I can name just about any band of significance of the 80s yet if one were to ask me to name any bands of today’s genre I doubt I could come up with a top five list.

Venom, Overkill, Voivoid, Bathory, Death, Morbid Angel, Skinny Puppy, Frontline Assembly, The Sisters of Mercy, Mayhem, Megadeth, Rites of Spring, Screeching Weasel, and The Cure.

I personally find little appeal in Queen. Even their most praised songs bore me... There's really nothing for me to like about them, so yeah. Same with half the popular 80's bands... Metallica was just average at best. Slayer is decent. Michael Jackson was actually very good, and same with Prince. The hair bands... While being decent normally, were normally just that.

Tons of 70's bands are still active, but many usually end up overstaying their welcome after two decades. I wasn't alive during the 80's, but I listen to bands from all decades. Half the bands I like from the 80's were metal, goth, and industrial, but I don't mind some of the more popular stuff.

Many bands from the 80's were one hit wonders, or just bands that made songs for money. Why did KISS bother with all the pointless make-up, and stuff? Money. Many of the bands were in it for the money. Some weren't, but the ones who were were bound to die off after awhile.

I really can't make a list of the best bands from the 80's, as my list would be very unbalanced due to my hate for glam metal, and simply my preference for bands that were lucky enough to get at least one video on MTV.

KlawedFlaw : You have a valid point but I have to disagree with you on Queen… Queen is a great band on so many levels… I’d be willing to bet that if you flip around stations on a radio and or satellite radio that you’ll probably hear one queen song per commercial cycle on anything from 70s/80s stations to classic rock.


They were originators which is something that sadly lacks severely in today’s music. When I listen to Sirius online I usually spend the most time listening to the 80s channel or Classic Rewind and it was fun when Sirius/XM was on DirecTV to sit back if nothing was on and hear a song on one of those channels and then flip around and hear the same song on a different channel just minutes apart. I must’ve heard Bohemian Rhapsody four times in an hour once just flipping channels one night.


I was thinking about other bands that I should have mentioned Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band should have been at the top of my list. I haven’t been to that many concerts in my life but that is one band I’ve always wanted to see live. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes are neck and neck with the E Street band in my opinion but the Jukes didn’t get nearly the kind of exposure as Springsteen did.

my favorite 1980's band was the Beatles.I dont remember many of their songs but i remember a fewof them.my favorite song that they sang is "Hey Jude" (well,I think thats what it was called)

bvd1022 : I never said Queen sucked. They are a talented band, but they aren't one I can get into. I've heard their songs, and even the song Bohemian Rhapsody isn't appealing to me. I understand their impact on music, and stuff, but that doesn't mean I gotta like them. I respect them, but do not enjoy the music.

Also, didn't Nintendocore come from modren day bands? Today's music is still strong like all decades, you just have more crap to dig through now.

Pretty much the rest of the 80's stuff I listen to are all one-hit wonders and such. So it really wouldn't be right to put any of them in the fifth place slot.

Metallica. By far. Their best stuff is from the 80's (or very early 90's)....

There are other 80's bands/groups that have been good, but I've enjoyed Metallica the most out of all of them.

I can't remember if they were late 80's or early 90's but The Cure was the first music that got me listening to music.

fightorace : Can you recommend anything by The Cure? They seem like a band I'd be into, but the one or two songs I found on youtube weren't much to my liking. Anyway, getting back on topic, they certainly count as 80's. They're mentioned in The Wedding Singer, and that's supposed to be set in 1986 or something.

For my 5th, I think I'd add Billy Joel. He had some good tunes during the 80's, now that I think of it.

I like quite a few 80's bands. I really like Flock of seagulls. Michael Jackson had some really good songs in the 80's like Thriller, Beat it, and Billie Jean. I like a song from when in rome.
