Just heard a sermon on that today. The bible says fire. There is also a possibility that the biblical description is symbolic. Not saying this to make it sound less as bad, but rather it could be worse. Hell would be a place of such unbearable agony due to the fact that it is completely separated from God.

I think he's referring to the expression, "when hell freezes over"... ehh... it's just random speculation.
It's definitely fire though, except much worse than actual fire on earth.

If hell is hot heaven is probably cold and snowy. If that is not the case then there is obviously somewhere else besides heaven and hell that is.

I think the burning lake of fire is symbolic of the suffering that will go on and not to be taken literally.

I actually imagine that hell is cold, dark, and miserable whereas heaven will be comfortably warm, bright and unimaginably happy. God is light, and light is warmth therefore the opposite of that would be dark and cold.

I think it's a far stretch to say that "hellfire" is simply symbolic unless you can render every verse, out of the vast amount of verses in the Bible that appear to speak of hell as a literal fire, as a metaphor for simply separation from God. If this were the case, I don't see the necessity for the Bible to even refer to it as fire.

I think it's also important to know that hell was never created for humans, but for Satan and the fallen angels. In Matthew 25:41, Jesus says the everlasting fire was prepared for the devil and his angels. scripture also teaches, "[God] is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance" (2 Peter 3:9). As such, the gates of hell are locked from the inside, meaning, if you end up in hell you will practically have to climb over Jesus to get there. So I don't think that discernment is used in referring to it as ice, symbolic possibly, but that's not the depiction the Bible uses.

I don't think its all that far of a stretch. I think quite possibly there was some symbolism involved in the descriptions. I still think that there will be fire and heat but it will be more terrible than the descriptions.
