Jynx originally bore a striking, but possibly coincidental, resemblance to entertainers in blackface. A strong case can be made for Jynx being a parody of or homage to the Japanese Ganguro and Yamanba fashion trends, which were extremely popular when Pokémon was first released, but it can't be denied that blackface-influenced characters have appeared elsewhere in anime and manga - examples can be found near the beginning of Osamu Tezuka's early graphic novel, Metropolis and also can be found with Dragon Ball Z's Mr. Popo.

As Pokémon became more popular in the US, this perceived similarity to a racist image from America's past offended some. In particular, it had offended children's book author Carole Boston Weatherford, who accused Jynx of being a racist stereotype in an article titled "Politically Incorrect Pokémon" in the magazine Black World Today, shortly after the anime episode Holiday Hi-Jynx aired. Episodes that contained Jynx in its original design were left unaired outside of Japan, including EP250 and portions of All Things Bright and Beautifly.

In response to this controversy, Nintendo changed Jynx's hands from dark blue to purple and its face from black to purple in Pokémon games, including in the English and international versions of Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. Jynx has appeared since using its new design with no problems. However, in the Who's That Pokémon? section of It's Mr. Mime Time, Jynx appears with its original colorings.

It's rather sad that people would get offended by a pokemon. I get the point of being angry over blackface but jeez. The only reason anything is racist is because some a-hole used a word or, in this case, facepaint wrong.

Just shows what today's people can be like, I mean it is POKEMON darn it! I highly doubt the animators were going for a racist showing of a pokemon.

bigNATE : Haha, well said Nate. The japanese aren't that influenced by our racist ways. Which sounds worse than what I mean. But the likelihood of the creators to look up Blackface and then go out and create a character SOLELY for the purpose of being racist is highly unlikely.

I still say that. But unfortunately one extremist can ruin things for alot of people, just be glad they didnt destroy Jynx completely.
People like that woman are always playing the race card just for attention, it's sickening.
The stupid cow should have taken it as a compliment instead, because if Jynx is a black woman then she's fairly popular and powerful, so I dont see how it's an insult.

Seriously, if comedians can find penises in Yu-Gi-Oh then people looking for reasons to sue will find anything they want to in Pokemon. I seriously doubt Jynx is supposed to be racist, and even if it is Mr. Mime should totally make up for it.

Sometimes people overreact, it's a creature, not one of those preformers/people themselves, if we stopped making Africans different by putting extreme emphisis on how much the same they are, then we'd all be much happier.
