TimeSplitters 2
Created by Free Radical Software and Eidos Interactive.
This game is available to PlayStation 2, X Box and Nintendo Gamecube.
TimeSplitters 2 is the second in the series (you already understood that, I guess). Before I start, I just want to say that TimeSplitters and TimeSplitters 3: Future Perfect are both excellent games that are also worth buying. I won't tell anymore about them, since they are not the subject of this review.
This game is a first-person shooter, with many different modes and challenges. Though the Story mode is also great, the Arcade mode is alot of what makes this game amazing. With up to 15 different game modes, 126 characters and a heavy load of weapons, TimeSplitters 2 almost never gets boring. Also, it is possible to play with up to 16 players.
Another interesting addition that has made this series so excellent, is the MapMaker. The MapMaker allows you to create your own maps for Deathmatches, Capture the Bag, Elimination, Zones, you name it! New to TimeSplitters 2, you can also make your own Story levels, with enemies and objectives.
Now for the main Story mode. The Story mode consists of ten levels, all set in a different time and area. Since no level looks like another, you can probably play through the story mode again and again and again... You can also select what difficulty to play on, with Easy for beginners, and Hard for rock-hard professionals, as this mode is actually very, very, very hard.
Before I start rating this game, I will just say that these ratings are my personal opinions only:
Graphics: 9/10
The graphics are great, but there are a few noticeable things. People dying into the wall for example. I don't really care about that personally. I never have time to watch them die anyway. Except of these tiny flaws, everything looks really good. Some of the cutscenes are really amazing, and I love watching them.
Gameplay: 10/10
This is a game you'll play for a looooong time. There's always something new to do, there's always a challenge. And trust me, it will take time to complete all 66 Challenges/Arcade Leagues with a Platinum award! But that's no problem, because it's fun! Also, the MapMaker is bound to have you going for months.
Story: 8.5/10
Story levels are great, Story cutscenes are great, most things are great. One thing is that I always feel a little out of place. In each level, you are never the same person, something I think is a little bit weird. Still, the Story is fun, combining realism, mysticism and futurism to make a great game.
Difficulty: 10/10
When this game tells you something is hard, do NOT doubt it. I mean, if you go for the Platinum awards in each Arcade League and Challenge, you must do it perfect, you hear me? Perfect! The Story mode is not too challenging on the lesser difficulties, but Hard difficulty is a true challenge, trust me.
MapMaker: 9.5/10
The genuine MapMaker returns from TimeSplitters 1. This flexible tool allows you to make your own level, either for Arcade use or as a Story level. You can choose between Beginner or Advanced map making mode. Though people might think Beginner is easiest, I advice anyone to use Advanced, as it isn't really harder to use, you just have more different tools. If you can connect your console to the internet, you can even download levels other people have made!
Overall: 9.4/10
A superb game that anyone can play, but only professionals complete. A varied and difficult masterpiece that will have you playing for many, many months, TimeSplitters 2 is a must for any gamer. TimeSplitters 2
