Back in the days before pentium there was a thing called a 486mhz computer with windows 3.1 on it that we had in our house. I ran into a shareware disk at radioshack called wolfenstein 3D, got addicted bought the game and played for hours. A year later or so a game called DOOM came out, It was basically the same game but instead of hunting nazi's you were after aliens with a slightly darker more gory atmosphere, I didn't and don't like any of the doom games and it drives me crazy that people give more credit to doom than wolfenstein 3d for the popularity of FPS games. Wolfenstein was first, so I give that game the credit. How do u feel? |

Hm, that is true. doom basically took wolfentstein's idea and changed it, but only enough
so it could be considered a different game. and soemhow, even though all they did was just change the setting, it got more populaur.it just does'nt seem fair. hold on, i'm going to go do some research. ill be back to tell you what i find. so it could be considered a different game. and soemhow, even though all they did was just change the setting, it got more populaur.it just does'nt seem fair. hold on, i'm going to go do some research. ill be back to tell you what i find. -------------------- |

Doom takes all the credit only because Doom made fps games popular. Doom owes everything to wolfenstein because wolfenstein was the grandfather of the modern day fps. Now don't get it in your mind that wolfenstein was the first fps game, that credit goes to maze war. So what I am saying is that people give credit to Doom as being the first popular fps and wolfenstein for modernizing the fps.

I think the jews are upset their game didn't go to far. It would probably have been more of a success if you were playing as a nazi instead of killing them. Doom had the better storyline, doom had better weapons, doom had better characters, doom had better sound fx & music that is why it won -------------------- |

JigSaw : I agree when u say doom has better graphics and gameplay and whatnot because the tek had gotten better. I'm just saying that other dude mentioned the first fps granted I knew wolfenstein wasn't first but i didn't know what the first one was and I'd bet your average gamer doesn't either especiallyh newer ones, my problem is they don't know wolfenstein either cuz everones cluttering the subject with doom, what if wolfenstein were never made? Would doom have had the sam success? Those are probably the key questions to determining who should get the credit? |

No one should get credit its too selfish to do. If someone is going to play the credit game then we need to give credit to the people who actually made games in electronic format in the first place -------------------- |

JigSaw : One problem with that, influence in current games. It's not so much the credit i'm worried about as the influence that doom has had on the genre, it's made it harder for me to find fps games i like. |

Doom is a pretty cool game, however any FPS game with boxed in areas like hallways or on spaceship I hate those. Pretty much every FPS game out there on the market today, or a lot of them have this same problem in them. FPS games should be limitless as far as where you can go, being stuck in constant 10x10 rooms is a borefest. My favorite FPS is Delta Force BHD, I don't think there is any better FPS out there you can do a ton in that. Left & Right lean, prone and roll, go anywhere no imaginary boxes that block you in. That is why I like it so much. I also think Tribes 2 was a sick game, Halo looks like a ripoff of that game. -------------------- |

JigSaw : I wish Halo was a ripoff of Tribes! Tribes was really an amazing game for its time, not to mention all of the crazy stuff that was created through the mods. There were some crazy in-depth FPS RPG-ish maps that you could spend hours on!
As far as credit goes... The same thing happens all over the entertainment business! The revolutionary step often times comes on the backs of other's hard work. You ask what would happen without Wolfenstein... Arguably there would be no Doom, but without Doom would we be at the point we're at today with FPS's in general? Wolfenstein may have made Doom possible, but Doom made the modern day FPS possible. As far as credit goes... The same thing happens all over the entertainment business! chrisd636 : thats the problem I don't like the modern day FPS games for the most part there are a couple innovative ones out there I like ex. Gears of War but I believe that doom's success ultimatly ruined the FPS game genre as we know it today, people tried to capitalize off it's success through imitation, Duke Nukem, Rise of the Triad, Quake all are clearly heavily influenced by Doom, though Quake III arena was fun. I believe that then set the genre in a direction that for some reason or another, alot of it has to do with corridors like a previous post mentioned, I can't pin it down exactly. So yea, I wish doom never did exist so I could see what the FPS genre would look like. Wheres my danged time machine at? I'm always losing that thing. |

fightorace : I guess that's where we just differ in opinion. I loved Duke Nukem 3D, Quake, and even Rise of the Triad, along with countless modern day FPSs. I also loved the Tribes series. I see where you're coming from with the corridor/indoor combat, but I think you're missing out on alot of great modern games just assuming that everything nowadays has stemmed from that! Take Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (and the first one) for instance. This game is ONLY brilliant open-world multiplayer maps! Then you've got STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl which is somewhat of a FPS/RPG hybrid (mainly FPS, the RPG aspect comes in the form of equipment).
I'm not sure how great of a PC you have, or if you have a 360 or PS3, but I can give you a great list of phenomenal open-world-ish/outdoorsy FPS games that would blow your mind! DooM got the glory, because it wasn't racist, containing swastikas or not playable for everyone.
Doom was for everyone that enjoyed gore, but not offensive scenes.

chrisd636 : I'm open to some xbox 360 suggestions u might have. Also when I played the game at 11 years old I wasn't taking the game as racist, Patriotic though yes, what i knew was I was killin some some WWII peoples we were fighting for good reason, they were racist and exterminating that race. |

The thing I think you are forgetting here is that both Wolfenstein 3D & DOOM were created by the same Developer - ID Software. This company almost by itself created the FPS genre in video games that saw many imitators for years to come.
I agree with you that Wolfenstein is unappreciated, but I think there is a reason. Doom was fortunate because of the computer technology evolution and upgraded game engine that really distinguished itself. Additionally ID Software kept the rights to Doom and published it by itself and put a big attention on the advertising & marketing - thus giving it a better impression on players. ID Software hasn't come out with a FPS in a long time and if you saw the news from the recent E3 Expo they have a new game called "RAGE" which just looks super awesome and I can't wait for that game to come out next year. alexanyways : How exactly is Wolfenstein racist? If you think killing nazis is racist, then you could argue 80% of the literature of WW2 is racist. The game simply had you being promoted by the Americans as a last hope to win the war.
Back to the topic, you could argue that Wolfenstein 3D hogged all the glory from Catacomb 3-D or Hovertank 3-D (which ironically was made by iD also) I think people liked Doom more because it had multiplayer support, the game was more balls-to-walls like, and much more. fightorace : So you're saying that you wish Doom was never made so there never could be success? That's like saying that I wish Final Fantasy was made to popularize the RPG genre. xfighter1138 : No, I didn`t say that. WWII is as real as it gets. Just it isn`t really playable by races that got hurt by the Nazis. I meant that Doom is more acceptable, because it doesn't involve Nazis.

I think one main reason could be that People like Blowing aliens to gory pieces more than doing it to Nazis.
BTW if people are thinking doom stole from wolfenstein, they were both made by iD. BTW if people are thinking doom stole from wolfenstein, they were both made by iD. |

I think people in the newer generations credit DOOM way more than Wolfenstein because of the massive popularity the franchise draws. It's more significant. In a sense, its the same way you would read a history textbook and find out how the valiant efforts of the Northern Union to free slaves were successful against the treasonous traitors of the Southern Confederacy. Not entirely what happened but, we get to hear it from the winning side. DOOM won the credit as the best FPS of its time and so it's looked at here, years down the road, as being the first, or most important. -------------------- |

Vizzed.com is very expensive to keep alive! The Ads pay for the servers.
Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music. This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees. If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.
We prioritize the community over the site profits. This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness. We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
