a quote from Game informer magazine:
Nintendo is looking into the possibility of charging users for the online component of systems like the Nintendo DS and Wii. Whether this would manifest itself in a monthly fee or a one-time upright usage fee-if it happens at all- remains to be seen. With Sony and now Nintendo contemplating making players pay for some portion of their online services, ayear from now will there be any free online lunch?
:end quote
Wow this is just too far, i declare war on Nintendo! but really are we surprised about this? everyone else is doing it so it was only a matter of time.

I hope they don't. If they do, they'll have plenty of mad people on their hands. Unfortunately, there will be people that will pay anyway so it won't do any good to have a fit. Hopefully the people that don't pay win & get them to not charge. They already charge outrageous amounts for their systems & the games are headed in that direction so why do they need to charge for the online features?

Yes, because they dont get enough money as it is what with charging people for roms and emulators (something which if anyone else does it it's really really bad), overcharging for badly made/short games and extra sales from all the fools that buy console after console just because of a color change.
Seriously people, this is what you get for trading in your good working white Wii just because they made a black one.
So what, it's a different color that's it, dont support that kind of marketing.
Good thing I dont use game consoles online otherwise I would be angry rather then just sad for those of you that do.

You can't really complain, servers are expensive to run if that is what this is all about. They were doing you a favor to begin with

Not really, not for the way they use them.
Servers are actually very cheap to run if you have the know how (like they do) and they are only being used as forwarders.
Because the other thing is that all it is doing is connecting two games together, that's about it.
Nintendo make more then enough profits just from european distribution of games to run things for free for a long time (games are at least two times more expensive in europe for example then in america).
I'm certain it's all about profits, plain and simple.

Well you have to put into consideration that adding multiplayer to a game is taking the game a step further which means it will cost more money to make. But I agree, Nintendo is nothing more then a cash cow these days They use to be cool.

This is a real problem as I play on my PS3 and Wii online all the time. If they make it where you have to pay then i'm going to be screwed.

Meh...Nintendo's online is mediocre anyway. If they wanted to charge people, they would have to up their online game a lot. And when I say a lot, I mean like voice chat and no gay friend codes...

you have got to be kidding me?! if Nintendo does what it says it's going to do, then people, get an X-Box360 or PS3! I mean honestly, does Nintendo want to fail? I mean look at what happened to SEGA, SEGA was the first console maker to go online and at the time it was expensive, it's almost the same now, the PSP GO is not selling as much as Sony would like so it's a matter of time before they drop it. Let's not forget about the DSi, that is a waste.

If Nintendo wants to do this then fine but prepare for it to be dropped like a failure bomb. I'll stick with my GBA SP, PSP 1000 (modded heh heh), DS, and my PS3.

OH NOES!!! I thought nintendo was better than that. Ah, oh well, if they even attempt to do this everyone will drop their new 3DS, brake every wiimote they have, and burn the console itself. Then, we'll all just dig out our old N64 or NES.

I'd like to see them try.

This does not really affect me considering I never really play online with my Wii or DS, I just play singleplayer or multiplayer locally. However, it is shame there is speculation about charging online as Nintendo's online unfortunately can not compare with PS3 or 360. This would be a bad move and probably make themselves lose a lot of loyal customers. I hope they reconsider this and dont go through with it otherwise I think they are digging there own grave. If this happens I will just play my classic systems.

Well if they do it they should do it the way Sony is going to do it. Have an option to pay for a premium service but keep the basics free. It's still just greed though :/ Who wants to help me a console? Free services and everything

Nintendo will also probally get alot of losses in sales of games like Pokemon if they charge for their handhelds to get online.
I mean most parents are only just ok getting their kids the DS whatever and a pokemon game, once nintendo charge for players to get online to trade pokemon imagine the reaction from parents.
"I just spent $200 on that stuff so you could play that game, now you need me to pay more money so you can play online??"
The only people that will pay these fees without complaint would be 360 gamers as that target market is nothing but people with money to burn.
Nintendo was supposed to be the "family friendly" one for people on budgets.
Hardly seems that way now, does it...

They obviously believe they will make more money out of it so therefore it is worthwhile for them.
Look at x-box live. You have to pay for that and it's still got crazy amounts of people playing online.
I don't like that they are doing it but I see what they will get from it.

joebab : And that's the real problem there, there are more casual gamers with disposable income then there are proper gamers, so they just cater for the majority.
No one cares about the loyal customer anymore, the gamer who has been buying their products for years, the customer that has to save or only buy when on sale to get the game that they have been looking forward to.
It's sad really

Yeah I totally agree, every company has given up on the loyal customer and gone to find a short term customer that will most likely spend more money. Which is fair enough in a way. But they still need a way to reward long term customers or something I think.
