Does anyone else find this to be true? For example: I enjoy the Twilight series books. I don't think for a second that there is anything special or amazing about them. I simply enjoyed the story and the different take on vampire lore. However, it seems that people are either firmly in the "ZOMG I LOVE EDWARD/JACOB" camp or the "I hate anything Twilight" camp.

This is just an exmaple... please don't talk about Twilight...

I am finding that this is the norm more often than not in regards to most entertainment mediums. Music, movies, books, sports. If you don't like something then more often than not instead of just being indifferent the thing you didn't enjoy is the worst ever.

I'm not saying that some things aren't really bad.... but I think most of us take it too far (myself included sometimes) when we say how much we love/hate something.

Take pokemon for example. I don't like it. I have never played a pokemon game and only by accident have I viewed a pokemon movie/tv show. I don't enjoy it, but why I feel it's my right or duty to go around telling people how much I hate it and that they are stupid for liking it makes absolutely no sense to me. I admit I have done this so I'm just as guilty as everyone else.

Is this making sense? Or was this the worst thread you've ever seen?

I hate this thread, it sucks!

Actually, I think this is absolutely true. There seems to be no middle ground anymore. Like you, I even do it myself sometimes. It's become sort of hard to remain neutral on anything because everyone is at one extreme or the other.

hypermonkey : I'm not even suggesting you have to remain neutral.

You are allowed to like or dislike something. The thing I find most disturbing is how passionate people get about how much they dislike something. Especially in the entertainment I suggested. I enjoy lots of things... and I would rather spend time talking about things I like than hearing myself and others say how stupid or bad something is.

And let's be honest, does anyone need to go around telling others how bad something is? Sure, maybe if it involves money.... but I think people are too critical about stuff. I have walked out of 1 movie in my life. I've sat through some bad movies though and enjoyed them. I knew they were bad but I still allowed myself to enjoy them in spite of that. I don't know why people have so much trouble doing the same thing. It's almost like people derive more pleasure from complaining than simply moving on in their lives and finding something better to focus on.

[edit] Also, it seems like once someone decides they don't like something then they feel obligated to make sure you don't like it either. And if you still do like it then there is something wrong with you for enjoying it.

I find this very true of the people who don't like FF7 or Halo. These people instead of simply not liking the games go all out and say they're some of the worst games ever made or some other untrue garbage.

It's annoying when people can't just respect others for what they like and dislike. Instead we've got people out there that think anyone who doesn't share the same opinion is retarded.

People need to be more open minded. For example, I don't like the GTA series but I'm open minded enough not to say that it's the worst game series ever made (because there's obviously hundreds of series out there far worst).

Here's an even better example which really irritates me. It's annoying when people say a video game system sucks, that's probably the most ignorant statement a person can make. You can't tell me that every single game for a system sucks and if someone is saying a system sucks, they're obviously biased and haven't put any effort into their opinion.

It's kind of hard not to act like that when you get bombarded by the crazes and fads that people go through. I'm going to use the Twilight series as an example. Imagine that everyday you go to high school you have to listen to people go on and on about how great it is. Then when you get home and turn on the tv there's nothing but commercials or discussions about the series. I know I'm exaggerating but my point is that there is always going to be a group that hates the popular stuff. Sort of to counter balance the border line obsessed people.

Does anyone need to go around telling everyone how great something is either even though they are just joining the bandwagon? Both sides are annoying.

Well we can't judge them for who they are because they are simply stating there opinions like you. If someone enjoys bashing stuff to extreme measures with short witty comments there is no debating with them they are quick to say it sucks. Then if you try and debate with them they will tell you that you suck I'm sure lots of people do it cause they are young and have nothing better to do but enjoy posting "this sucks" comments on the web. It gives them pleasure and makes them feel superior to all the losers who like something.

There is no point in complaining how much they suck cause then we are basically being hypocrites instead try finding someone who can actually debate against why something sucks.

Zamiel : I actually enjoyed Twilight, but I couldn't stand how everyone was utterly obsessed with it. You're right though, because having something constantly thrust in your face will make you start to dislike it.

geeo: I misunderstood. I thought you were talking more about trying to stay away from categorizing something as either great or awful instead of anything in between. (I hope that makes sense to you, because I don't know how else to say it.)

You've got a great point geeo. I notice that a lot too. That's why I tend to use "I hate" or "I despise" rather than "it sucks" But then again, I usually use "sucks" for like, music or movies and stuff too.
The point is, it's really hard to be neutral. Sadly, people seem to tend to have that "it's all about me" kind of mindset so if he thinks it sucks, it must be the worst thing in the world. And like how everyone's been saying, the stuff people really tend to dislike is the stuff is obsessed with, unless you're obsessed with it yourself, if it would be Twilight(After reading Dracula, I can't really imagine a nice vampire...), or Star Wars, or High School Musical, etc. I usually can't stand obsessions unless I'm obsessed with it too. Example? I hate all those things except for Star Wars, since I like Star Wars, but knowing that I haven't read any Twilight books or watched movies, and I only watched one High School Musical, I would count myself guilty of that mindset. Though, I do think that some people tend to have some pretty valid reasons not to like it, but are a little quick on deciding it sucks or it's the abomination of its time, mainly because of the fact of obsessions. An example on that would be that Twilight's story just seems a tad bit ridiculous to me, and the thing I mentioned about Dracula already makes me sort of "distance myself" from the books, if you will. But then, the obsession is what drives me away from the series. A little differently, after watching High School Musical 2, I actually can't really say it was bad, I actually found it pretty alright(to my surprise.), but the fact is, because of everyone being SO obsessed with it, I couldn't get myself to like it that much.
So, basically, we should blame all those people who are over-obsessed fanatics who drool over fantasy characters, want to marry vampires or actors/actresses and so forth XD
And a mistake on our part, unless there's a logical or valid reason why it sucks, then we'd basically be hypocrites XD.

Zamiel : I agree with you. Those people are annoying. I would rather listen to someone talk about how much they enjoy something than how much they hate something though.

mdynasty - yeah, if people want to have an opinion about something that is fine. I'd almost rather see people change it from "that sucks" to "I think that sucks". It's no longer a definite statement but simply an opinion. And like Jigsaw pointed out.... by saying "it sucks" they remove any chance for debate or conversation.

It's good to know at least a few people understand where I'm coming from on this.

I understand what all of you guys mean when talking about this sort of stuff. Yeah, I myself have wound up going down the major hate track once or twice.

And, as such, we're all entitled to our opinions. In most cases, this does leave certain groups, not at each others groups. Cause they don't try to force you to hate it, or like it.

Still, there are some fandoms that are still super crazy. (Sorry if I use Twilight fans for an example again, but these are true facts.)

The major, die hard fans of Twilight, that are borderline crazy(You'll find out why.) are far more worse than those that dislike. Mostly, because of the simple fact, is that essentially, the diehard fans, drive off those that are getting interested, and want to learn more about.

How do they drive them off? They essentialy hold a gun to their heads ready to shoot if they don't like it.(Not litterally of course, but that's what it feels like.) So they drive off potential fans cause they're so insanely diehard.

That aside, all the other fandoms don't have that kind of insane split side. From what I've seen anyway. I don't mind Final Fantasy, Halo, Pokemon, I just about like everything. Maybe not all equally, but I know it's there, I just live with it. It's not going to harm me because I don't like it like how I like Metroid, Mega Man, Mario, Legend of Zelda, Metal Gear, that sort of thing.

Needless to say, I bashed Twilight so much before in the past, I can't bash it anymore than I have. My emotions have dulled on the matter. Not saying I'll even consider liking, but I'm not going insane about it. All I do is state cold hard facts.

"Sucks" is now the new nasty word that is OK to use. I don't like it when people use "sucks." That's just an ignorant word to use when you don't have the vocabulary. Please start using something else people, or we degrade our status as humans.
