Steam is a digital distribution, digital rights management, multiplayer and communications platform developed by Valve Corporation. It is used to distribute a large number of games and related media entirely over the Internet, from small independent efforts to larger, more popular games. Steam is set apart from similar services primarily by its community features, completely automated game update process, and its use of in-game functionality.

There are over 1,100 games available through Steam,[3] and in January 2010 Valve announced that it had surpassed 25 million active user accounts.[4] It regularly services in excess of two million concurrent users.[5] Although Valve never releases sales figures, Steam is considered by its competitors and clients to be the market leader, controlling an estimated 70% of the digital distribution market.

Portal is a single-player first-person action/puzzle video game developed by Valve Corporation. The game was released in a bundle package called The Orange Box for Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360 on October 9, 2007,[1][2] and for the PlayStation 3 on December 11, 2007.[5] The Windows version of the game is also available for download separately through Valve's content delivery system Steam[7] and was released as a standalone retail product on April 9, 2008.[6] A stand-alone version called "Still Alive" was released on the Xbox 360 Live Arcade system on October 22, 2008; this version includes an additional fourteen puzzles. A Mac OS X version was released as part of the Mac-compatible Steam platform on May 12, 2010.[8]

The game consists primarily of a series of puzzles that must be solved by teleporting the player's character and simple objects using the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device (ASHPD, also dubbed the portal gun), a unit that can create inter-spatial portals between flat planes. The player character is challenged by an AI named GLaDOS to complete each puzzle in the Aperture Science Computer-Aided Enrichment Center using the portal gun with the promise of receiving cake when all the puzzles are completed. The unusual physics allowed by the portal gun are the emphasis of this game and are an extension of a similar portal concept in Narbacular Drop; many of the team members from the DigiPen Institute of Technology that worked on Narbacular Drop were hired by Valve for the creation of Portal.

Portal was acclaimed as one of the most original games of 2007, despite being considered short in length. The game received praise for its unique gameplay and darkly humorous story, created with the assistance of Erik Wolpaw and Chet Faliszek of Old Man Murray fame. It also received acclaim for the character of GLaDOS, voiced by Ellen McLain in the English-language version, and the final credits song "Still Alive" written by Jonathan Coulton for the game. The game's popularity has led to official merchandise from Valve including plush Companion Cubes, and fan creations such as recreations of the cake and replicas of the portal gun

Portal really is a good game.
A little short perhaps, but still good.
Pity I already got a copy when I got the Orange Box
But yeah, anyone that likes puzzle games and/or FPS should get this game.

I wanted to make a thread about this when I 1st heard about it on SA:MP ( GTA san address multilayer), but I thought it will fall under advertising, so I didn't, I still have the 1st post for the thread, see (didn't fix spelling mistakes, this was "beta", I saved it in a notepad) :

The download has finished, it is a good game, but sadly very short, I hope Portal 2 at least have 30 levels.

My download is taking forever . I average at probably about 150 KB/s, and I've still got a couple hours worth of downloading... yet I can only download between 2 and 7 a.m. EST (satellite internet bandwidth limits are off at that time) or when I'm somewhere like my church. Curse you download limits!

Only today and tomorrow left, HURRY AND GET IT, Steam said something about the price changing, the price MIGHT go up, so hurry !

bignatealpha : (I have been replying to your posts quite often), I actually bothered to do some maths, and I figured out that if your download speed is about 100 KBs, it will take 3 hours to download 1 GB, so 100KB is good if you spand lots of time on the computer.

I still haven't figured out 150KB because I don't have the mood to, I actually figured the 3 hours = 1 GB thing in a bus.

But don't worry, you can download even when the offer expires, my download was ABOUT 3-4 days long.

(I am going to summon everyone who might enjoy this game in the theme of the ending song in portal : "Still alive", of course not geeogree:, since he thinks every game suck, expect for some (Okay fine, I actually summoned him, but it is for the joke, he might like this game, I dunno.) )

Didowe : ACTUALLY... it's more than 3 gigs. And that whole Still Alive thing you did at the end not only didn't work right, but it is rather annoying .
I finished mine this morning (accelerated download speed from 2-7 FTW!) and the game rocks!!!!!
Just bind it to your Steam account, even if you can't download now!
