You can also try uninstalling and reinstalling the plug-in as well. Also to answer your question on why you need the plug-in is because the emulators are made to work with it and that is the only way those games work. The other games are different kinds of emulators which allow them to work without that specific plug-in but they still need java plug-ins to run though. If they are not working for you, you can also try get-your-rom.com and just download the ROMs for the games you want.
