Definitely Charmander. I like the fire type, and Charizard is awesome. I always teach mine dig, so that it's effective on almost half of the (original) pokemon types. With both fire and ground moves, you're good against bug, grass, rock, ghost, poison, and electric.

Bulbasaur easily has the best type for the gyms in Kanto, and is definitely a good choice. Especially in Gen I games (rather than the Gen III remakes), when a Venusaur using Razor Leaf crits EVERY TIME. Oh yeah.

My favorite 1st Generation Starter Pokemon is Charmander. Charmander is already strong and powerful. When he evolves into Charizard, he is more massive, more cooler, and more extaordinary than other pokemons. With powerful stats and a strong moveset, Charizard is a powerful pokemon.

My 2nd favorite 1st generation pokemon is Squirtle because when he evolves into Blastoise, Blastoise is a great, powerful pokemon.
