I think that it should and shouldn't be allowed in school because they need it in case of emergencies and that they can be a distraction.

No. There are no good reasons to have cellphones in schools.

If students want to bring them and leave them in their lockers so they have them on the way too and from school that's fine but there should never be a cell phone in a class room.

I've had an emergency that has taken me out of class and having a cell phone on me would not have made my finding out any quicker.

I agree with geeo, they should be allowed to bring them to school, but they shouldn't have them in the classrooms.

People who have them need to turn them on SILENT or else your cover is blown And yea, cell phones come in handy what if someone is shooting up the school... a cell phone might save the day I am not one of those people though who actually use phones so they are pretty pointless for me. People just need to know how to turn their phone off in class thats all then it wouldnt be a problem.

As long as they actually just had it on them for emergencies (and on silent or vibrate) it would be fine, but we all know that that's not how it would go. Kids seem to be addicted to texting, which is extremely annoying :/

I think they should be able to have to at school in case of emergencies, but probably not in class. I think that was my downfall...I was (and still am) a chronic texter in class and that makes me never pay attention to what is happening...

Is a teacher legally allowed to take a phone from someone for the day if they use it in class?

If yes, then I would say let them bring it in class, but if they're caught texting, take the phone away, no warning.

If not, then like previously mentioned, students should leave it in their lockers.

I think that there is no need for students to have cellphones in a classroom.
Because they usually play with them and that's too annoying both for teachers and the kids, who want to pay attention at the lesson.

Clearly, I'm getting older because I remember the days when I would answer "yes" to this. My answer, however, is NO.

It seems to me that it would be a complete distraction in more ways than one.

I'm not going to go in depth about it because i'm sure you can imagine yourself the problems of minors running around in school with their cellphones.

I voted no.
LOL
I remember this teacher actually tried to justify why there should be no cell phones in school and one of his main reasons was because
"Cell phones can be used to set off bombs"
I just remember being like this guy is an idiot.

I said both, but then again, i'd prefer if you were allowed to bring them to school, but not in class. just to keep with you so you can call after school or when something goes wrong.

I accidentally hit should, but I do believe they shouldn't. If they have their phones in school, they're going to text in class and not pay attention, as well as distract others in other classes. Some people argue that they need it for emergencies or whatever, but if that's the cause they can turn it off and leave it in their backpack or in their locker, and not bring it to class. If it's an emergency where someone is calling them, they could call the school and talk to the student from there.

If people don't want to and/or don't care about paying attention in class, I'm sure they'll find something else to distract themselves with besides their phone. It's not like bad students and bad grades are the direct result of phones. I'm sure they've existed ever since school was invented, whenever the heck that was.

Really the only time I'd see this as a problem is when they use them in class, otherwise I think they should be able to have them due to after school activities and such. I think they should have to have them in there bookbag or locker and can't be seen in school while school is active for the day.

I still have a question.

Can teachers legally take your phone away for the day if you break their rules and use it in class?

I think you should be allowed to have cell phones for emergency cases only, but if a person is doing stuff like txting under their desk or stuff like that, they should have their phone taken up because that is very distracting.
