For those of you who don't pay attention AT ALL to pokemon, every single pokemon name is made up of one-to-three words, english or otherwise. So here's your chance to show how smart you are and prove that you know what makes up the names of the creatures we all know and love.

I will start out giving the first 10 names and the origins. Now for various reasons, every following post must give the next ten and would then continue into the next generation as one continuous list (from 1 straight to 400-somethin).

So, let's start with the easy ones.

1 - Bulbasaur - Bulb (part of a plant) + Dinosaur
2 - Ivysaur - Ivy (itchy plant) + Dinosaur
3 - Venusaur - Venus (flytrap) + Dinosaur
4 - Squirtle - Squirt (shooting water) + Turtle
5 - Wartortle - War (battle) + Tortoise + Turtle
6 - Blastoise - Blast (exploding toilet Lol) + Tortoise
7 - Charmander- Char (type of burn) + Salamander
8 - Charmeleon - Char (type of burn) + Salamander
9 - Charizard - Char (type of burn) + Salamander
10 - Caterpie - Caterpillar (fuzzy worm lol), but without the "llar"

And please, if you actually know the words that make up the names, also describe where those words come from (so we know you actually know what your talking about Lol). The only exception is for words that everyone obviously knows (like dinosaur and turtle like I did) but for everything that isn't that brainlessly easy, define it.

12. Butterfree: Butterfly + Free
13: Weedle: Worm + Needle
14: Kakuna: A corruption of the word Cocoon
15: Beedrill: Bee + Drill
16: Pidgey: Pidgeon + Budgey
17: Pidgeotto: A corruption of the word Pidgeon
18: Pidgeot: Another corruption of the word Pidgeon
19: Ratata: Rat + Attack
20: Raticate: Rat + Eradicate

Ok, since this thread isn't as active as I want, I'll go ahead and be the next poster and hopefully people will catch on.

21 - Spearow = Different version of Sparrow
22 - Fearow = Fear + Sparrow
23 - Ekans = Snake spelled backwards
24 - Arbok = Cobra spelled backwards
25 - Pikachu = Pika (japanese for Electricity) + Chu (japanese for Mouse)
26 - Raichu = Rai (japanese for Thunder) + Chu (Japanese for Mouse)
27 - Sandshrew = Sand + Shrew (burrowing mole)
28 - Sandslash = Sand + Slash
29 - Nidoran F = Nido (Japanese for Two Genders) + Ran (Japanese for Revolt) + F (female)
30 - Nidorina = Nido (Japanese for Two Genders) + Rina (corruption of japanese word Ran)

Nidoran's name is symbolic of it's forceful nature. It's always revolting and threatening to fight back against it's owner. Lol

38-Ninetales= Nine+ Tales(actually "tails" but spelled wrong intentionally)
39-Jigglypuff=Jiggly(eeer...)+ Puff(like marshmellows lol)
40-Wigglytuff=Wiggly(Wiggle)+ Tuff(Tough)

But we must tell people about what they never seem to think about! There's a whole different story behind Pokemon, and what you think isn't exactly what's there.

56-Mankey=Man(you're a man)+ Monkey OR Mad(Grrr O)+ Monkey, due to its aggressive behavior
57-Primeape=Prime(like Metroid Prime) OR Primate(monkeys and the like)+ Ape(Ape Escape?)
58-Growlithe=Growl(that crappy move)+ lithe(means limber or flexible)
59-Arcanine=Arcane(mysterious)+ Canine(K9, or a dog... that too.)

83: Farfetched: farfetched is a word for which means unbeleivable.

88: Grimer: Corruption of the word Grime
89: Muk: a corruption of the word Muck
90: Shellder: corruption of Shell

91. cloyster- like a cloyster as in many perhaps refering to the spikes.
92. gastly- gastly= creepy or scary or ugly.
93.haunter- haunt like what a ghost does
94.gengar- possibly a shortening of doppelganger
95.onix- as in the mineral.
96.drowzee- drowz as in getting tired
96.hypno- hypnotize=to put to sleep
97.krabby- a misspelling of the word crabby as in cranky
98.kingler- king as in the boss lol. the king of crabs.
99.voltorb- volt(measurement of electricity) + orb (round)
100.electrode- elect= electricity

101. Electrode - Elect (electricty) + trode
102. Exeggcute - Exeggcute = eggs are cute.
103. Exeggutor - egg + executor
104. Cubone - cub, or cue ball( pale white head, or to the fact that its bone resembles a snooker cue) + bone

105. Marowak - Marrow + whack
106. Hitmonlee - hit + Monster + Lee - as in Bruce Lee; perhaps meaning the monster that hits like Bruce Lee.

107. Hitmonchan - hit + Monster + Chan - as in Jackie Chan; perhaps meaning The monster that hits like Jackie Chan.

108. Lickitung - corruption of lick + tongue
109. Koffing - corruption of the word coughing
110. Weezing - corruption of the word wheezing.

111. Rhyhorn- (Rhino)-(Horn)
112. Rhydon- (Rhino)-(Don- Spanish for a Lord)
113. Chansey- (Chant)-(Perhaps Daisy; as she is a nice pokemon, and disies represent peace)
114. Tangela- (Tangle)-(Lace; maybe laces tangled up?, as he looks like a bunch of tangled up laces?)
115. Kangaskhan- (Kangaroo; maybe because he looks like one?)-(Genghis Khan; a famous ruler of the Mongol Empire?) Man, that was hard.
116. Horsea- (Horse)-(Sea) Or Horse of the sea; Seahorse
117. Seadra- (Sea)-(Dragon or Drake)
118. Goldeen- (Goldfish or Gold)-EEN; maybe eel with an 'n' instead of 'l'
119. Seaking- (Sea)-(king) Or king of the sea
120 Staryu- (Star)-(Yu; chinese for 'fish') Essentially 'Starfish'

121.Starmie (Star)-(mie) I looked it up and "mie" means third branch in japanese*
122.Mr.Mime (Mister)-(mime) Just a mans name.
123.Scyther (Scyth)-(er)Scyth's are tools and Scyther's arms are shaped like them.
124.Jynx (jinx) shes probably named that because of her psychic abilities.
125.Electabuzz(electric)(buzz)The buzz is in there cuz it can communicate using electricity
126.Magmar(magma)Called that because they live near volcanoes
127.Pinsir(pincher)Called Pinsir because of the pinchers on top of its head
128.Tauros(tauro) Tauro means bull, and these pokemon are bull-like.
129.Magikarp(magic)(carp)Called this because people believe they are magical fish
130.Gyrados(gyrating?)(dos) maybe gyrating because of its movement and "dos" 2nd evolution

131. Lapras - Laplace, a mathematician who wrote several books on the mathematical properties of the sea and tides / Lapis, a bright blue gem

132. Ditto - amoeba, a single-celled organism with no definite shape / a blob or a rubber ball.

133. Eevee - pronunciation of E-V, the first two letters in the word evolution.

134. Vaporeon - vapor ( rain showers) + -eon suffix, common to all Eevee evolutions

135. Jolteon - jolt (thunder ) + -eon suffix, common to all Eevee evolutions

136. Flareon - ( rocket boosters, which propel things by combustion of fuel ) + -eon suffix, common to all Eevee evolutions

137. Porygon - polygon + origami

138. Omanyte - Corruption of ammonite, the creature on which it is based.

139. Omastar - nautilus + Ammonite + star

140. Kabuto - kabutogani, or horseshoe crab
