Marathon Distance: 26 Miles

Current Personal Record: 8 Miles

Current Personal Record on Hilly Road: 8 Miles

Deadline: July 29th, 2010 Before 2010 ends
July 29th, 2011 (26th Bday)
Before I hit 27

Experience: Probably 8 years now but I haven't been doing it very constant, actually took a break from it for a few years (around the time where I gained 30 or so pounds which was around the time of getting married but I've lost all of that as of a year ago). Was in Cross Country in High School.

Coldest Condition Ran in: 0 degrees with -30 windchill (had to use a facial mask with a breathing vent)
Hottest Condition Ran in: 101 degrees (and very humid) but was only able to run 1 mile

It's been a goal of mine for years to run a marathon but I've just never put enough effort into it but this year I'm far more serious. I doubt I'll run it in any competition of any sort but I do want to run it before I reach my 25th birthday which is on July 29th. I don't really care what speed I run it either, just as long as I can run it straight without stopping.

Last summer I didn't run much so I sorta lost a few miles on my current personal record but the summer before that is when I got the 8 miles. Where we're living now is somewhere completely different so now my running routine is much tougher because we live out in the country and the road I run is 80% hill, so that means 80% of the time I'm running up a hill or down a hill and most of it is pretty steep. Anyone who has ever done hill running knows how exhausting it is as to why my current person record on this road is only 2 miles but hill running is very good training so when I get the opportunity to run on a straight road, that's when I'll know what my current record is at.

If anyone has questions about my running or for those interested in running as well and want some tips and advice, post here. I'll update this first post as I progress.

Preperation
Of the day that I run, I usually eat a breakfast rich in protein such as Eggs, Bacon and Hash browns. 2 or 3 hours before running I drink a healthy energy / sports drink, currently I've been drinking Hydrive. 2 hours before running I usually eat a bowl of cereal, current favorite is Wheaties Fuel. I don't eat anything within 2 hours of running but I do drink, just not a ton. Before running I do many stretches and a little walking to warm up. Currently looking into finding a good muscle recovery drink since that's really the only thing holding me back from running a greater distance. Lately I've been eating a banana 2 hours before running which seems to help a lot.

Running Log
Anything prior to April 18th not recorded

04-18-10: Ran 2 miles straight on hilly road but since I've ran a lot lately and haven't allowed my muscles time to heal, they burned really bad and had to rub bio freeze on them. Probably the 2nd worst that they've burned.

04-22-10: Ran 1 1/2 miles on hilly road but got a side ache which is pretty rare since I haven't got one in a while. Either my pace was to fast or I was breathing to quickly (or a combination of both).
04-22-10: 2 Miles on hilly road - After an hour I decided that I wouldn't feel good about myself if I didn't do at least 2 miles so I ran again and for 2 miles. I could've done a 3rd mile but it was getting dark and my wife was waiting for me at the end of the road so I decided to call it quits for the day. Plus I didn't want to wear out my muscles for tomorrow, plan to go biking. Tornado siren started going off when I was running into it so I had to cover my ears (them things are incredibly loud when you're right next to one outside) so that through off my running and breathing pattern but I was able to get back on track.

04-23-10: 4 Miles on hilly road! I seriously could have done another 2 miles easy if it weren't for my toes being really sore. I need new support for my shoes. I really think I could do a half marathon at this point (on a straight road of course, not on hills). I was in a ton of pain the last mile so I increased by speed by a bit to get it over with. Since 80% of my road is hills, I ran about 1 3/4 miles worth uphill.

04-28-10: 6 Miles on Hilly Road! Probably going to take an 8 day break from running, a few of my toes got blistered and I never get blisters. I think I'll make it a habit of running once a week for now on, that way my muscles have more time to recover/repair and when I do run, I'll continue to push myself and hopefully beat my previous record each time.

05-19-10: 2 Miles on Hilly Road. Not a lot, in fact I'm very disapointed. 3 reasons why I wasn't able to go far far:
1. There's nearly a 25 degree temperature difference since I last went running so that's a bit tricky to get adjusted to (was a little over 80)
2. I didn't get enough fluids in my body and drank to much caffeine. Usually when it's really hot I dehydrate fast if I don't get enough to drink before running.
3. Been almost 3 weeks since I last ran (this is due to my feet and toes needing the extra time to heal)
I'll probably make another attempt within a few days. Other than the lack of fluid, everything else went fine.

05-22-10: 2 Miles twice on Hilly Road (4 total). The problem this time was that I didn't take in nearly enough calories before running. It may seem like I always have an excuse for not going wrong but that's just the way running is, if everything lined up perfectly than a person would be able to go forever but there's always going to be some things that get in the way of that. I haven't been running a very big distance lately but I've made up for it by biking, a day before this day I biked 16 miles, the next day after this day I biked 18 miles (and it was 90+ degrees lol).

05-27-10: 4 Miles on Hilly Road after 16 Mile work out on my exercise Bike.

06-04-10: 4 Miles on Hilly Road. Was a very humid day and temperatures in the 80's. 80+ degrees isn't so bad but when you have really thick humidity it makes everything so much harder. For one thing, when it's really hot you tend to breath harder but when it's really humid, you can't get a lot of air so it makes going the distance really tough.

06-11-10: 8 Miles on Hilly Road! Wow, today was a great day, almost everything was perfect. The weather wasn't as hot and humid as last time, was only in the upper 70s which is far more tolerable compared to the temperatures of the last few times. At one point I felt like I would never wear out but that feeling definitely went away on the last mile, that's when it became a pretty big struggle but I think it was mainly because my drink was completely empty by mile 7 and I rely heavily on fluids when I run, especially when I'm sweating pretty good and tackling some steep hills that seem to last forever. I do need to get some running socks though, I haven't been running with athletic socks and it does make a pretty big difference when you're running the distance, so before I run next I need to make it a priority to get some good socks, the bad socks I've been wearing have been one of the factors which have been giving me blisters on my toes. I only got blisters on my small toe this time but I'd like to end that all together by wearing better socks and toughening up the skin on my feet. I'm VERY happy with the outcome today, this will leave me in a pretty good mood for a while.

06-17-10: 2 Miles on Hilly Road. What went wrong this time was completely out of my control. In the morning I checked the weather and it said it wasn't support to storm until late at night so I spent all day preparing to go running and right before I head out my wife calls me from work to let me know that there's a bad storm coming. I started to run and quit at 2 miles because it was starting to lightning and rain in the distance and I didn't want to be far away from home when it started to get bad. I've ran in the rain a few times for Cross Country in High School so it's something I can tolerate, I don't like it but I can tolerate it. Lightning on the other hand would be just stupid putting myself at risk to run during, plus it was getting really windy and tornado's touched down in nearby towns so I definitely wasn't going to risk it. I'm sure I'll have a few more similar experiences during the next 1 1/2 months. Anyways, I'll try again Monday or Tuesday, just hopefully the weather doesn't change on me again like that.

06-21-10: 2 Miles on Hilly Road. Today my leg muscles got really sore and prevented me from going any further, they felt like they did 2 months ago. Most likely this is due to having ridden my exercise bike for 15 miles before running (though I've done that before with no problems).
06-22-10: 2 more Miles on Hilly Road. After spending an hour deciding what I wanted to spend the rest of my day working on, I decided to make another attempt at running which resulted into 2 miles again. Muscles were less sore but they weren't feeling good enough to pull off 4 miles.
06-22-10: 2 more Miles on Hilly Road. About 15 minutes after my 2nd run, I went for another 2 mile run. I figured if I wasn't going to go a good distance in 1 shot, I might as well do a total of a good distance. So today I did a total of 6 miles split into three 2 mile runs.

06-28-10: 8 Miles on Hilly Road! Even though this isn't really progress over my current record, I'm proud of this because my last mile was really tough and I was really tempted to quit at Mile 7 but I was able to push myself. Basically my muscles at the end of Mile 7 were really sore, blistered toes (again which is irritating), and I was pretty much out of energy. Just to put into perspective of how strenuous running on this road is, doing 8 miles took me about 2 hours which is about 15 minutes per a mile, I could probably do a paced run of 7 1/2 minutes per a mile on a straight road for 8 miles (and actually I'm hoping to run a Marathon distance at about that rate eventually, but for my B-Day I'm not going to time myself, I just want to be able to go the distance). When you've been running for 2 hours straight, no breaks, it starts to get really tough to push yourself toward the end. I may have hit "The Wall" but I doubt it (although possible since I've never hit it so I don't know what it's like, and I did get sick after running but that might be because of the Stacker 3 I took). I took a Stacker 3 before running, hoping to get an energy boost and to burn off some extra fat, definitely regret it though because them things have some bad side effects. Even though I completely ran out of energy, I completely regained it after I ate and because of the Stacker, that night I could barely sleep, probably took 2 hours to fall asleep and I'd wake up every half hour, probably didn't get more than 2 hours of sleep. Than the following night I still couldn't sleep very well, probably didn't get more than 4 hours of sleep. My muscles are still sore due to lack of sleep I've been getting since running (and the date as of this entry is 07-01-10). I did do about 16 miles of biking outside the day before running and 8 miles on my exercise right before running so that somewhat makes up for only doing 8 miles but my goal is to be able to do 13 miles on this Hilly Road before I do the marathon and I'm 5 miles behind that goal and have less than a month left! (I figured 13 miles on the hilly road is about the equivalent to 26 miles on a normal road but we'll find out when the time comes to run on a normal road, which is something I haven't had the opportunity to do in over a year). Anyways, I may have to take a 10 day break from running because of the blisters I got on my toes again, I'll make up for it by doing plenty of bike riding though in the mean time.

07-02-10: 1 x 2 Miles. Ok actually this day I had no intentions to go running. I went for a bike ride, did about 18 miles and than I got a flat tire 4 miles from home. I tried to pump it up with my portable air pump but just my luck, that didn't work (I prepare as much as possible for this sort of thing and something like this happens). So I headed over to my wife's Grandpa's house which was about 3 miles away. So I ran 1 mile while pushing my bike, walked another mile and ran the 3rd mile. The reason why I didn't run the entire thing is because my feet were still sore and blistered from a few days ago when I ran and running with blisters really sucks. Also I was also pretty tired out from just biking 18 miles and it was hot out and I didn't want to exhaust myself, especially since I was really low on fluids.

07-29-10: 8 Miles on Hilly Road. Well I didn't reach my goal, actually I may have if I had the opportunity to run on a flat road but I had to settle for the Hilly Road. I didn't expect to do 26 miles, especially not on the hilly road. My new goal is to do 26 miles before the year ends.

I've gone biking and running a few times since than but nothing worth recording.

08-12-10: 4 Miles on Hilly Road BUT the temperature was 96 and with a heat index of around 106 and humid. So even though I didn't do a ton on this day, the fact that I was able to run this distance in this kind of heat makes me happy. The heat was awefull though, people probably thought I was crazy. I was sweating really bad as if I was melting, seriously felt like I was going to fall to the ground and splash everywhere lol. Half way through I stopped at our house real quick to grab a towel to run with because the sweat was making it hard to see, it's like getting salt in your eyes so the towel was handy to wipe the sweat off my face and it also server a second purpose since I had it wrapped around my neck, the back of my neck usually burns if I'm in that kind of heat for to long so it was good to keep it protected.

08-19-10: 4 Miles on Hilly Road. I only set out to do 4 miles today since my wife and I had plans and I didn't have much time to run anyway.

08-24-10: 2 x 2 Miles on Hilly Road. Been biking a lot lately so that used up most of my energy and also muscles were sore from it.

09-01-10: 8 Miles on Hilly Road. Some reason I can't get above 8 miles on this road, either fatige really kicks in or my joints and muscles are just far to sore to keep going (though this is a really tough road, as I said, it's a lot of steep hills and it's about 80-90% hills). I'm happy with 8 miles and my toes didn't blister, I think putting Vaseline on my toes has solved that problem. It'll probably be a while before I go running again since my daughter will be born before I'm ready to go running again.

09-12-10: 6 Miles on Hilly Road! I only set out to do 6 miles since I wouldn't have time to do more with the Packer game and it's a good thing that I didn't do any more than 6 miles because my wife went into labor shortly afterward and we ended up going to the hospital a few hours after I got back (and the fatigue and soreness really affected the experience).

*A few short unrecorded runs*

10-18-10: 4 Miles on Hilly Road! I've just been so busy since my daughter has been here and now with having to pick up freelance work on top of working on vizzed, just don't have time to go a very big distance. I may have to just try again when she gets older and less time conusming and make the new deadline my 26th Bday (which is convenient since 26 is also the distance in miles that a marathon is).

12-10-10: 2 x 2 Miles on Hilly Road. Well this is pretty impressive in my opinion consider 2 things: 1. I haven't ran in nearly 2 months and 2. It was around 20 degrees and running in the cold is a pretty big disadvantage, especially when the roads are snowy and icy.

12-22-10: 4 Miles on Hilly Road. There was a lot of snow and slush, made things a bit difficult but I'm pretty happy 4 miles considering I haven't ran much in a long time and considering the weather condition.

*A few short unrecorded runs*

4-2-10: 4 Miles on Hilly Road. Not bad considering I haven't ran much in a while.

4-7-10: 4 Miles on Hilly Road.

*A bunch of unrecorded runs*

1-10-11: 7 miles on Hilly Road, the most I've done in probably a year. Last summer I did a lot of biking and barely did any running. Yesterday was probably one of the warmest days in January, it got up to around 55 F degrees, probably the first and last time I'll ever be able to wear a t-shirt and shorts in January (the average temp is around 15 F). Looks like the rest of the month will be cold again so I'll have to continue doing my running in the cold but it was really nice to jump start the year with a great run in great temperature.

Wow, good luck with that. I tried running the Boston Marathon two years ago, but I had messed up my knee the week prior to the race, so I only made it to mile 10(ish), but one of my friends managed to do it in under three hours. She's just a freak of nature though. (I say that in the most affectionate way possible. )

If the farthest you've ever run is 8 miles, it's gonna seem almost impossible, but you can do it as long as you can manage to not overthink it. The farthest I've ever run is 11.5, but I was just trying to finish, not for a speed record.

One tip about Gatorade, and all those drinks: those are best for after you run, not during or before, because they really make your mouth dry out, and your saliva becomes very thick. And if you drink them while running, you can actually get dehydrated faster, because you aren't absorbing the electrolytes and other things as efficiently.

Anyway, good luck, I hope you succeed!

Well the thing is, I haven't had a straight road to run my furthest distance in over a year so I may be capable of running well over 8 miles. Either way I have 3 months worth of training and I've developed a few techniques which have greatly increased my distance.

What do you prefer drinking while you run? I've been drinking Propel lately and that seems to work. I also take Mucinex a few hours before running, that usually helps me breath better.

Didn't realize how well in shape you are, a Marathon something you'll consider someday?

I actually haven't run more than 10 or 15 times since August, so I need to start again.

The only thing I drink while running is water, but I'm sure that Propel would be fine, seeing as it's basically the same. As long as it's not sugary, or anything.

Here's something else I've heard, but never experienced it myself. If you are really hot while running, and what you're drinking is very cold, you should hold it in your mouth for a few seconds before swallowing it. I think it's supposed to prevent causing a shock weh it reaches your stomach, but I've never tried it, so I'm not entirely sure.

And, yeah, I definitely want to run a marathon someday, I'm just not sure when I'll really have another chance. Probably no time soon.

Usually when I bring something to drink along with me I let it cool down because I hate holding a really cold bottle while running. I have a great uncle who was working on a really hot day on a farm and came inside to drink a really ice cold glass of water and had a heart attack, I'm assuming the shock to his body is what caused it (though I might be wrong, it's been a while since I've heard the details).

Roxas941: lol don't worry, I'm in good enough shape to not have a heart attack or anything

tonetone714: Sorry to disappoint, I guess the only thing you can do is to sign up and train for next year.

EDIT: I only did 1 1/2 miles today due to a side ache I got, which is something I haven't got for a while so I'm a bit surprised by it. Keep in mind that 1 mile on the hills I do is probably equivalent to 3 or 4 miles on a straight road.

EDIT2: After an hour I decided that I wouldn't feel good about myself if I didn't do at least 2 miles so I ran again and for 2 miles.

4 Miles on hilly road!

Yeah, I have an addiction to running lol. The feeling you get after pushing yourself and accomplishing your goal is incredibly rewarding, just puts you in such a good mood the rest of the day. I also do it to keep my weight down, I'm currently at 183 pounds which is slightly over weight for my height which is 6 feet tall. When I graduated high school I was 145 so I've really put on a lot of weight (although a lot of it muscle).

Suuuuure it is.

I know what you mean about that feeling you get, I love it. I also know it's true that running really does a lot for wieght control, but that's scientifically proven, not from experience.

What matathon are you going to run, if you don't mind me asking? I kind of thought that most of wisconsin was either farms of hills.

hypermonkey: If I put on 40 pounds of fat, I would be a big blob lol (not saying all of it msucle, just a small portion). Usually people think I'm 20 pounds lighter than what I am so that has to mean I put on some muscle, otherwise all the training I've done over the years was wasted

Yeah, that feeling is worth every little effort. A healthy body is key to a healthy mind, I know that from experience

Yeah there's a lot of farms and hills here lol, my road that I run is 80% hills and the scenery is either trees or farmyard (though we currently live in the country). I don't think I'll run any competition, just my own personal 26 miles, not sure where yet but I'll figure it out when the time comes.

Wow, that's a really cool idea. That't the kind of thing that would never occur to me in a million years, but seems so obvious now. But, even if you do that, you'll still have the hill problem, won't you?

Hill problem when I run a marathon? I'd be able to find a long enough flat road to do it on, I just need a flat road at least 1 mile long and just run it back and forth enough times. Even though it's hilly in Wisconsin, there are plenty of places that are flat.

Ah, I see. I personally would have a hard time doing that, just because it would get boring for me. I like when the scenery changes and you are actually getting somewhere. There's nothing wrong with that plan, but I would have so much trouble keeping myself interested. It's a really good solution though.

hypermonkey: I agree but that's what music is for. Well I do know of a route that's around 26 miles and it has a few hills but is mostly flat, I could do that. I also know of a Bike trail that is completely flat and is 40 miles so that's another possibility. But I definitely agree that you need to feel like you're making progress.

Ran 6 Miles on Hilly Road! Probably going to take an 8 day break from running, a few of my toes got blistered and I never get blisters. I think I'll make it a habit of running once a week for now on, that way my muscles have more time to recover/repair and when I do run, I'll continue to push myself and hopefully beat my previous record each time.
