I have the urge to be really good at guitar and piano, but I don't think i can ever take lessons... if i just set my mind to it, and practice a lot, do you think I can play these instruments well?

Yes, I think playing an instrument without taking actual lessons will make you become great at it because if you do then you are making yourself a better person. Doing this, you need to put alot of dedication and effort to do good without any help. It will make you focus more and it will be less stressful because there are nobody to tell you what to do.

It will take alot of motivation and just by looking at videos, or the book, you can do it.

Yep, you also have to set your mind to acheive this greatness and practice alot.

Well somewhere down the line someone is still going to be teaching you things because you really can't rely on yourself to learn everything when it comes to playing an instrument. I say this because whether you reading, watching a video, etc., someone is still technically giving you lessons. There's also somethings within these materials you won't necessarily be able to comprehend maybe without the personal help of another. Another thing with learning instruments is, if you plan to actually want to learn how to write music like guitar riffs for example, thats not anything that can be taught. It's a musical gift to do that, its either you got it or you don't, plain and simple. I think you maybe able to learn somethings by yourself without formal lessons, like face to face but like I said early. No matter how you learn the instrument, you mostly likely going to be getting lessons from someone else in one form or another.

Well, what i meant was I'd use a book or something like that and not taking actual private lessons... I guess i forgot to put that out there haha. But thanks both of you for your insight!

I have a tip for you: focus on learning one instrument at a time. Piano then guitar, or if you want, guitar then piano. Its more enjoyable that way, if you ask me.

It's definitely possible to become a great musician without direct lessons, especially if you're really self-motivated to learn. Just study out of books, learn by videos, and most of all, practice! Good luck in learning!

@Juliet: Yeah, I'm pretty much focusing on guitar first. Piano would be nice but it's not a top priority.

Yes, it's possible. My mom is excellent at the piano, she never got ANY sort of lessons. My brother is good at drums, my sister (sammywammy) is good at the keyboard.

Yes, it is possible, I am still getting better and better at piano even though I stopped taking classes two years ago, you just have to practice a lot! Although, it is a little easier with a teacher...

I think im realy good at the piano which i dont ever play because I know NOBODY with a piano.
Oh and the drums im amazing and I dont take lessons.

It's very possible to become good at playing an instrument with no lessons. I have a friend who can play almost anything he hears on the harmonica, and another friend of mine plays the piano quite well and he's never had a lesson before either. I myself have mastered the kazoo sans formal lessons.

I tried taking guitar lessons but it got boring after a while (all this stuff about chords). So I started teaching myself and I'm very experienced.

I can lay a guitar down and mess with the strings. It sounds like someone smacking a guitar. I'm so awesome at it.

Seriously, I don't really have much musical talent when it comes to instruments. I used to play clarinet and I was decent at it. I also played flute and I was absolute rubbish. My music teacher was a fat, apathetic creep who didn't really know how to teach music. I never really learned how to play the flute at all.

Does singing count as an insturment? Probably not.
