XIANGNING, China — Rescue workers set up equipment and prepared Sunday to mount an operation to try to find survivors among 153 trapped miners in a northern China, saying they have not given up hope more than one week after the mine flooded.

But no decisions have been made yet on a next step after a dive team entered the mine Saturday and called the situation underground "very difficult," with black, murky water complicating efforts to reach sites where rescuers hope miners have survived.

No further signs of life have been detected after apparent tapping was heard Friday, said Wen Changjin, an official with the news center set up in a town near the mine in the northern province of Shanxi.

Rescuers started helping a week after the flood, do you think there will be any survivors?

Have you heard any of the follow up on this? Were there any survivors? From the situation, it really doesn't sound like anyone would have survived That's terrible, I hope that at least someone was alright!

There wouldn't be any survivors left because they were trapped in a flooded mine.

[sigh]... this is totally untrue. Just because the mine is flooded does not mean that people can't survive. There are air pockets in mines where it would be very possible for someone to survive. Surviving for a whole week is a stretch.... but the human body is very durable and you could survive for a week. It would be tough though.

The average human body can live a few weeks without food, and about 3 days without water. The mine being flooded, there is probably a lot of water available to drink, if the miners can find a clean way to drink it. There could be survivors in air pockets, just like geeo said.

I suppose there could be survivors in the air pockets, like geeogree and BTowns said. If someone managed to get stuck in an air pocket with a steady supply of clean water, they could still be alive, albeit starving and about to die. Of course, I'm not sure how long ago this happened- a couple of weeks? The odds of finding survivors sharply decreases every week you leave them down there, so after two weeks, I think that there wouldn't be many survivors, if any. I still hope that there are.
