Earlier today Tropical Storm Don was upgraded to a hurricane. However, Don became a hurricane in the North Central Atlantic. This is unusual because usually we do not see hurricanes develop in the North Central Atlantic until late summer and into the fall months.
So, how did Don being ? Don started off as a non tropical low in the North Central Atlantic. Due to high pressure what would become Don moved south over warmer water. Over warmer water the non tropical low started to resemble a sub-tropical storm. A Subtropical Storm is a storm that is a hybrid between a tropical storm and a non tropical storm. Sometimes they resemble a Nor'Easter. Unlike a Nor'Easter they have some tropical characteristics. Subtropical storms are named like tropical storms.
Eventually, the low became subtropical and had winds of 39 mph. Therefore, it was named Subtropical Storm Don. Don though appeared to be short lived as shearing winds weakened Don back to a tropical Depression.
Then Don moved back over the warmer water. Don then transitioned into a fully tropical cyclone. It strengthened up to 50 mph. Then Don found a warm pocket of warm water. Don then started to steadily strengthen into a 60 mph then 65 mph. Today Don strengthened into a 75 mph category 1 hurricane.
Don was unusual is that it became a hurricane in the North Central Atlantic in July. This is the time of the year we usually do not see development. WE normally see storms form in the North Central Atlantic in August, September, October and even early November. In fact, Don might be the Northernmost hurricane in July at least in the modern era 1950-Present.
Looking at surface data. One reason Don's development was possible was due to above average water temperatures. Water temperatures were 3-5 degrees above average. This put water temperatures in that region close to 80 degrees. In addition, unlike most of the Atlantic there is no dusty dry air there. Therefore, this was the perfect environment for Don to become a hurricane in. After, all Hurricanes need 80 degree or warmer waters, moist atmosphere, and light wind shear.
All of these ingredients came together to allow Tropical Storm Don to become a hurricane.
