cafeman55 : Sokka is an non bender, meaning he can't bend any element. Their is a good population of people in the avatar universe that are non benders. Its likely a genetic thing but their have been some oddities where you can have a non benders born from parents who are benders, and benders born from non bender parents, Katara being an example for that.

But hey, who needs bending when you have a trusty boomerang.

It only takes like 2 episodes for Sokka to trust him, though, after Aang allows Zuko to capture him in exchange for Zuko agreeing to leave the Southern Water Tribe alone.
